HOW DEFENSIVE SPRAYS WORK
OC Inflammatory Agent
Pepper sprays contain oleoresin capsicum (OC), which is a derivative of hot cayenne peppers. It is not an irritant like tear gas, but an inflammatory agent. When the spray comes in contact with mucous membranes (eyes, nose, throat, and lungs) it causes an immediate reaction. The instant inflammation of the breathing tubes, caused by the spray, cuts off all breathing except what is necessary to sustain life. When the pepper spray come in contact with capillaries of the eyes, it causes an immediate dilation. This results in temporary blindness.
Pepper spray will not cause any lasting after effects. Because it is an inflammatory, rather than an irritant, OC is effective against all of those who feel no pain, such as an individual on alcohol or drugs. OC has proven itself to be the best deterrent available for attacking dogs and bears.
Pepper spray is a natural, 100-percent organic food substance made of hot peppers and corn oil --- you could spray it on your chili. Some restaurants use it to make hot chicken wings. Pepper foam is the same substance with a foaming detergent added. In 20 years of use by police and civilians there has never been a single substantiated case of lasting health damage caused by pepper spray or pepper foam. The pressure to spray is provided by an ozone-friendly propellant 134a that is non-toxic, non-flammable, ozone-friendly and free of CFCs and HCFCs. This is used in pharmaceutical inhalers.
Pepper spray comes out as a liquid and stays liquid when it hits. Pepper foam comes out also as a liquid but becomes foam when it hits. This lets you see where you hit in low light conditions. On the other hand, because of the extra volume taken up by the foaming agent, Pepper foam has considerably less shots in the same-size can.
Don't be confused by percentages of OC. OC percentages only measure the amount of red pepper, not the effectiveness. Check out the chart below.

2,000,000 SHU is the absolute maximum amount of pungency contained in any defense spray. Many of the discount brands claim 10 or 15% OC but the actual SHU's are less than 1,000,000! The only number that really matters is the percentage of Capsaicinoids in the product not the percentage of OC. Capsaicin is the active ingredient in the OC. This alkaloid is the irritant in the OC. Capsaicinoid Content is the true measure of heat. BODYGUARD LE-10 contains 13.3% Capsaicinoids. That's why no other products advertise this percentage because they have not had lab testing by the NIJ or an independent lab. The NIJ is the goverment testing agency that certifies body armor and other law enforcement products. Types of Spray Patterns
- Fog: Great for crowd control. Poor for personal defense.
- Stream: Narrow heavy stream. Good for law enforcement and experienced users as it requires more accurate aiming and allows officers to spray an individual in a group.
- Foam: Thick slimy foam. Reduces cross contamination which is not usually a consideration for consumer use. Due to the foaming agents the active OC amount is greatly reduced.
- Cone: Covers conical area with heavy spray. This is the type I sell for use by the public. Law enforcement unit. Absolutely the best!
