>>where can i get an rpm of php4? Don't even think about that. You give apache and php maximum flexibility, you definitely need to compile from source. I haven't touched RPMs for 2 years ever since I first tried FreeBSD. It's not too difficult to compile from source. |

RPMs are fine. It's a Tarzan-syndrome when people say that compiling from source is the best thing since sliced bread. There is a good reason why package systems were invented. Package systems exist for all unix flavors that I have heard of. Always use your operating system's package system (whether it's Red Hat Linux, Debian, FreeBSD, or whatever) if possible. That makes it easier to perform systematic system administration and cuts down on the need for documentation. |

I don't think it is a Tarzan-syndrome to compile fro source. RPMs are fine, but they are very limited. After all they are "pre-compiled binaries", so there is no room for tweaking your installation. Lucky for us FreeBSD users there are ports. I don't know who invented those, but they work like a charm.  |

Yeah, FreeBSD rocks!!  No, really, I like the ports system because you have the customisation of source-compiling, and the ease of maintenance of a package system. So, all in one place. |

Don't count cvsup out. With cvsup updating your ports and the voluntary works of FreeBSD port maintainers, that make RPM even further behind of FreeBSD port system. I regret for wasting two years playing with Linux. |

Luckily, I only played a couple of months with Linux after discovering "The Demon". Adn to tell you the truth (and with the expense of being wipped) after seeing what FreeBSD can do, I don't know what is this Linux-fuss all about... |
