#4 August 1999: "The Review Contest"
In order to boost GameFAQs' review section and include as many reviews as possible, it was time to add some incentives. From Midnight, August 1st, 1999 to 11:59:59PM August 31st, 1999, there was a race to see who could submit the most reviews.

Of course, submitting reviews for games that had already been reviewed to death (i.e. Zelda) will cost you. On the other hand, submitting an extra-long review for a brand new Japanese game nobody's ever reviewed before will net you a ton of points (specifically, 12.5).

The prizes?

  1. Top Three Point Totals: First place will net a $100 Electronics Boutique gift certificate, with $75 for second and $50 for third.
  2. Three semi-random winners: Three more people have a chance at $30 gift certificates with their odds based solely on the number of points they gained during the contest. For example, if there were only three entrants, one with 6 points, one with 3, and one with 1, the one with 6 would have a 3/5 chance of winning, the one with 3 a 3/10 chance, and a 1/10 chance for the last winner. This drawing will take place among the fourth place and lower finishers with a positive point toals.
  3. Three fully-random winners: Finally, there's a completely random drawing for three other lucky entrants (with positive point totals that didn't win in either of the first two categories) for $25 gift certificates.

The final standings can be found here. So, who won?
  1. Top Three Point Totals: This one was decided after just a couple of weeks: GlucoseJoe, Dingo Jellybean, and Hiryuu swept the field.
  2. Three semi-random winners: The three winners (and their odds of winning, based on their point totals) were: Blackjack4x (5.08%), TenshiNoShi (3.92%), and Takezo (0.26%).
  3. Three fully-random winners: The purely lucky winners were: Truegamer, Faust, and PHarris
