| what is Linux: Linux is a free
operating system that will run on almost any computer out there. |
| Linux free, why is RedHat (or any other
distro) ~$50 in the stores: Linux is free, RedHat is not
"Linux" RedHat is a distribution of Linux. This
means the RedHat install CD(s) contain the Linux kernel and a whole
lotta other software to boot. But under the GPL (I believe)
Linux (the kernel) can not be charged for, what you get when you buy
the cd is, a convenient way to install and some docs... should you
wish, you can download RedHat for free from ftp://ftp.redhat.com
(this goes the same for any other distribution).
|
| what distribution should I choose: from
my experience, for a newbie, RedHat is the easiest to get up and
running quickly and easily, but others may have different opinions.
|
|
why should I try Linux: well, I'm
not really trying to convert anyone, I started just out of
curiosity, but some reasons are: hate M$, want something more stable
than Windows, it's free, it's incredibly customizable, its almost a
fad now, take your pick.
|
| I do (insert favorite
thing here) in windows,
can I do it in Linux: most likely, and you can probably get the
software to do it for free freshmeat.net. |
