When Allaire went public last month, I wrote that the public was warming up to infrastructure companies, but today I'd like to focus on the subset of Web server tools.
My dynamic duo of companies that make Web-building products, Allaire and Vignette (Nasdaq: ALLR, VIGN), are now both public -- Vignette went out today. Allaire, maker of ColdFusion, has the edge in number of customers, but its deals are smaller than Vignette's, whose StoryServer product is known both for its robustness and its high price.
Also soon to go public is NetObjects, which IBM acquired in 1997. NetObjects' Fusion is brilliant for Web design, but the company has had rocky growth, and the product hasn't exactly become synonymous with site management the way ColdFusion and StoryServer have, despite its inclusion into several of IBM's Lotus Notes packages. Still, these three products are different enough from each other that each could have a long and successful future.
