Abstract: Giving Linux Enterprise Strength

As the price/performance ratio on commodity-off-the-shelf hardware has improved, Enterprises have increasingly looked to implement these systems in place of more costly, traditional mainframes. Linux, as a UNIX-like operating system, offers many in the Enterprise a familiar environment across many platforms at an extremely competitive price.

The upcoming release of the Linux 2.4 kernel will include many long-awaited features, including many of interest to the Enterprise. This white paper (PDF, 198K) provides an overview of these features, Enterprise applications for Linux, and the considerations the Enterprise faces when choosing to implement Linux systems.
