Space Plumber is a first person 3D game. This time, no weapons, and you're alone ... The water level is rising and you only have a few minutes to activate the pumps, your oxygen is dwindling ... Will you find the pumps in time ? (It took us 4 tries to get through the first level !)
Once you get the source, you have to modify the makefile, as it comes with DOS as a default target.
ClanBomber is another Bomberman style game, very similar to Bomb0bomb. Requires ClanLib. Installation was a delight: ./configure, make, make install and clanbomber. Lots of stuff blowing up, maybe more appropriate for older kids.
Mad Bomber is a catch the falling object before it reaches the ground type of game. A mean looking guy is dropping bombs over the wall, and you have to catch them in your water bucket to extinguish them before they reach the ground. Requires the SDL libraries. The home page has binaries and source packages. We go the source files, but we couldn't compile with the supplied Makefile. If you have problems too, you might want to try ours. Gets a B for the compile problem, an A for the game once you get it working or use the binaries!
Bomb0bomb is an arcade game in the Bomberman style. The game is to be played with multiple players on the same computer and keyboard. And according to the author, even on the same chair ! It runs on the console with svgalib. The game is modular, new add-ons are created every months, and users can also create their own. Also has sounds and special effects !
BlackPenguins is another version of the Qbert classic. This time of course, it's a penguin jumping around ... Nicely done using the Qt libraries. For a console version using svgalib, try Linberto
Update Dec. 3, 1999: Well we got it to work ! Just make sure you're running your XFree86 in 16bpp. With all the trouble we got, we'll give a B. Make sure to check out the bug reports on the web site before you install.
Bill Kendrick submitted a few of his creations: Bobobot is a "run and jump" arcade game with multiple levels and screens, in the style of Nintendo "Megaman". GemDrop is a "get the falling object before they bury you" type of game. The latest version came out last week. You can check out Bill's page for a few more games for older kids or their parents ... Make sure you check the bugs reports before you start installing.
Diego Javier Grigna pointed us to Linberto. This is a port of a DOS game from way back when (which was a port from a Video Arcade game), and was actually my little sister's preferred game for a long time, until the 5 1/4 floppy it was on became unreadable ... Your character hops around trying to touch all the steps of a pyramid while the evils bubble and the evil flower try to get it. At the same time, you have to make sure you don't fall off the sides. Help and dialogs are available in English and Spanish. Diego did a great job, and Linberto gets a well deserved A. (Console only, graphics with svgalib)
A Tux game. We haven't tried it yet, and the home page says it's not quite ready for prime time, but it sure looks very good so far.
The games in the following list require the ClanLib Libraries. ClanLib is a software Development kit (SDK) geared towards the development of games for Linux.
- Pingus. is a Lemmings type game, where you have a group of penguins walking around trying to reach the exit. You have to help them by telling each one what to do: dig a hole, build some stairs, etc. The game is still a work in progress, but we were to play a few levels. We like it a lot !
(Install tip: You just need the ClanLib package to run the game. There are also a devel. and docs packages).
LFK's review: We gave it a B because it is not quite finished yet. However the author has done a great job, and we can't wait to give it an A !
- You can get a Pacman from the ClanLib download page. We had to tweak the default resolution of our X-window to get it to work, but Pacman will bring back some memories ...
LFK's review: We had a hard time getting it to work, and the response to the keyboard seems a little slow, we quite often missed a turn: Pacman gets a B.
