.so files are shared object library files - they contain routines common to many programs - like dll files in windoze. My guess is that your window manager .deb file is pointing at a specific version of the .so file and so not picking up the library - does the file actually exist ? ? If not you could try a crude symbolic link to a libjpeg.so that does exist .... Hope this helps a bit.

The answer was that I needed to run 'ldconfig'. That's one lesson I won't forget.
