ATM offers potential benefits for NATO communications, notably as the basis for a single integrated backbone that can carry voice, data and videoconferencing traffic both over a forward link to deployed forces as well as within a local headquarters. Projects CA, CS and CT are contributing to a division-wide ATM project that is evaluating and demonstrating the potential of ATM for military communications. The primary result of this activity will be the specification of cost effective network architectures and the associated evolutionary steps, that meet evolving military operational requirements for the dissemination of information between and within NATO headquarters.

The major objectives of this NC3A division-wide ATM project are the following:

  • support evolution strategies for NATO strategic and tactical networks
  • acquire and gain hands-on experience of ATM
  • study behaviour of ATM over military transmission systems with low bandwidth and high error rate (SATCOM and radio)
  • study the benefit to military users of multimedia applications and improved/guaranteed quality of service supported by ATM
  • assess the cost/benefit trade-off for the use of ATM for NATO communications
  • assess use of commercial ATM network components and services for military communications
  • ensure multi-national interoperability through demonstrations and trials

The major tasks of the division-wide ATM project are:

Details of the ATM project are described in NC3A Technical Note 656 Revision 1.
