Mitchell & Ness to market authentic NFL throwback jerseys
NEW YORK (Nov. 1, 1999) As the NFL heads into the millennium, fans may still retain a link to the past with a new line of authentic NFL Throwback jerseys by Mitchell & Ness. The Philadelphia-based manufacturer was awarded a license from NFL Properties, Chuck Zona, senior vice president of NFL Properties, announced.
The nostalgic line of Throwback jerseys will be identical to those worn by players in their eras, including the original fabric, design, and size of the names and numbers. The line will be introduced in February at the Super Show and will debut in fall 2000.
The initial collection, which will offer sizes 44 up to 60, will focus on jerseys from 1950 to 1984. The jerseys are expected to retail for around $250-$350 and are targeted at the collectibles market and major sporting goods chains. In addition, the line will be distributed through catalogs and e-commerce sites. The target consumer is the hardcore fan who enjoys the heritage of the NFL and can identify with Throwback players. Also, the line is intended for young trendsetters who are attracted to authentic retro fabrics and styling.
Even though Mitchell & Ness is among the NFL's newest licensees, the company traces its history with the NFL to 1933. Mitchell & Ness was the official uniform supplier of the Philadelphia Eagles from 1933 through 1964.
