• You must enter a term in Words anywhere, Words in title, Publication name, or Words in URL to successfully complete your search. If none of these have been filled in, you will get no results.
  
  
• Words anywhere will search for your terms in the titles, URLs, abstracts, Web pages and full text of all documents that fit your search criteria.
  
  
• Words in title will search for your terms in the titles of the Web pages or Special Collection documents that fit your search criteria.
  
  
• Enter a word or phrase into the Publication name search box to return results from Special Collection sources which contain that word or phrase.
  
  
• Narrow your results by putting a Special Collection publication name in quotes.
  
  
• Words in URL will search for your terms in the URLs (Web addresses) of Web pages that fit your search criteria. Words in URL will not include Special Collection documents. Examples:
  
  
  • www.nlsearch.com will find all web pages which originate from the nlsearch.com domain
    
    
  • northern will find all web pages which have the term ‘northern’ anywhere within the URL
    
    
• SELECT DATE RANGE
  
  
  • Fill in one date field or both to narrow your results by date. The dates must be entered in the format mm/dd/yy.  For example:  Type 12/01/97 for December 1st, 1997.
    
    
  • Sort results by date if you want the most recent documents to appear first. Results will be sorted by relevance if you do not choose to sort results by date.
    
    
• SELECT SOURCES

  • The results list will include all sources if you do not check any of the boxes beneath the SELECT SOURCES section.
    
    
  • Narrow your search by checking off at least one source.
    
    
  • If you select more than one source, your results list will be larger than if you select just one source.
    
    
  • Select a language from the Documents written in menu if you would like to narrow your search to all Web sites or Special Collection documents written in a specific language.
    
    
  • Select a country from the Web sites from menu if you would like to narrow your search to Web sites from a particular country. This search will be based on the country domain name in the URL. This selection does not refer to Web sites about a particular country, nor does it refer to Special Collection documents.
    
    
• SELECT SUBJECTS

  • The results list will include all subjects if you do not check any of the boxes beneath the SELECT SUBJECTS section.
    
    
  • Narrow your search by checking off at least one subject.
    
    
  • If you select more than one subject, your results list will be larger than if you select just one subject.

  • The results list will include all document types if you do not check any of the boxes beneath the LIMIT DOCUMENTS TO section.
