Writer’s Guidelines

Thank you for your interest in writing for Northwest Baby & Child. Our 16-page newspaper is published monthly by Baby Diaper Service.

Our goal is to inform, entertain, inspire, and reassure expectant parents and parents of young children. We believe raising children is life’s most challenging and satisfying work. All Northwest Baby & Child staff members are parents, who like helping families get off to a good start.

Our editorial emphasis reflects these beliefs:

There is no one right way to raise a child.

• Parents are the experts on their own children

• If you don’t know your options you don’t have any.

Familiarize yourself with our publication. We have a theme for each issue (e.g. celebrating mothers, birth and postpartum, family vacations, holidays); articles throughout the paper reflect our theme.

We accept manuscripts for these pages: Page One, Parent-to Parent, Health & Safety, and Northwest Living. Please query us by letter or email before writing an article. We may ask for a resume or samples of your writing. We assign reviews of books, cassettes, CDs, software, and videotapes.

Articles are usually 200-500 words. Articles for Page One are usually 1000-1500 words. Please double-space your manuscript, and put your name, address, email address, and phone number on the first page. If you are a BDS customer, please include your account number. You may wish to include a one- or two-sentence biographical sketch at the end of your submission.

We do accept manuscripts via FAX, email (attached file), or on disk. Save your file as "Word for the Mac" (We use Word 98, which can translate Word documents 5.1 or greater). If we are unable to translate your manuscript, we may ask you for a hard copy.

We try to use an article within three months of receiving it. Submission of an article grants us the right to edit the work for publication and to convert it into digitized form for a one-time placement on our website (nwbaby.com), unless you specify in writing that your work is not to be used on the website. Upon publication, rights revert to the author, and you are free to sell it as a reprint. We respectfully ask you not to resell articles to parenting publications in the greater Puget Sound region of Washington state.

We also accept poetry and photographs. We often print color photos; however black and white photos reproduce better. We sometimes sacrifice the reproduction quality for the emotional quality of a picture. Photos must be at least 3"by 5" to clearly show the subject.

Submit all queries, manuscripts, and photos to: Betty Freeman, Editor, 15417 204th Avenue SE, Renton, WA 98059 or email: Betty Freeman. If you have questions, please call 425-235-6826. Our FAX number is 425-228-2503.

Contributors are compensated with certificates from Baby Diaper Service. We compensate monetarily if the writer is no longer in need of diaper service. A 500-word article usually pays $40 either in certificate form or in money; shorter articles–$20, poetry and photos–$10 each. Payment is made upon publication.

Thank you again for your interest in Northwest Baby & Child.
