What is Palm, Inc.?
Palm, Inc., a 3Com company, is the leading provider of handheld information management solutions, including the best-selling Palm III, Palm V and Palm VII series of connected organizers. The Palm Computing platform is the industry standard for information management and is the foundation for the market-leading connected organizers from Palm as well as products from Palm's strategic partners such as IBM, QUALCOMM, Franklin Covey, Nokia, Sony and Symbol Technologies. Palm products let people carry their most critical personal and business information in their pockets, and access it at any time, anywhere.
What is the Palm Computing® Platform?
An open architecture for handheld computing, the Palm Computing platform provides an ideal basis for third-party developers and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to create and deliver successful information management solutions. The platform consists of three primary components: the Palm OS operating system; the HotSync data synchronization technology; and the software interface capabilities to support hardware add-ons. Today, more than 43,000 developers are creating software and hardware add-on solutions for the Palm Computing platform, with more than 500 new developers signing up every week. More than 5,000 Palm OS-compatible software applications are already available, the largest application base of any handheld information manager.
What is the "Palm Economy"?
Since its introduction in 1996, the Palm Computing platform has spawned a large community of third party applications and hardware providers, OEMs and licensees, all working to extend the capabilities and uses of the platform into new areas. We use the term "Palm Economy" to refer to the economical implications, in terms of total revenue and job creation, generated by the efforts of this active community. One key indicator of the growth of the Palm Economy is that Palm today has more than 43,000 developers and thousands of applications already on the market. Hundreds of millions of dollars have been generated by the Palm Economy worldwide, and numerous companies have been created solely based on Palm Computing platform-based products.
How can Palm compete in the enterprise?
Palm is already the standard in handheld information management for companies of all sizes, enabling employees to access instantly the information they need to make informed business decisions. We have a larger installed base in the enterprise than any other platform. We expect to extend that lead with better products, market-leading partners, and better services and developer solutions than the competition.
- We will continue to drive the market by creating the simplest, most wearable systems for information management. Ultimately, an information manager is useless to a corporation if employees won't use it and carry it around with them, and Palm's focus on usability and extremely low weight and size makes it the product preferred by users.
- Palm will continue to strengthen its close relationships with the top enterprise software players, including Oracle, SAP, Remedy, IBM, Sybase, Tivoli, Sun, and many others. Palm has a positive, cooperative relationship with these companies, and they are committed to making it easy for Palm users to access their systems and data. This is in contrast to some of Palm's competitors, who have confrontational relationships with other corporate software companies. Licensing partners like Symbol and IBM give Palm's platform further strength in the corporate space.
- We are aggressively expanding our enterprise service offerings, which help companies to quickly deploy and maintain effective mobile information access solutions.
- We will continue to enable our 43,000+ developers to easily bring to market the widest range of solutions available, broadening the open functionality of the Palm Computing platform for corporate use.
