PSA Membership Density
At one point, a comment in the Python newsgroup about heavy
Python book sales in Japan prompted an exercise in tallying up
PSA membership by nationality. Greg McFarlane took those raw
figures and cast them against the country population figures,
and came up with the proportional membership figures -- see
below. One amusing note is that PSA members, at their densest
concentrations, were just about one in a million -- I could have
told you that!)
We've got figures as of Aug '98 for the country representations,
but don't have the proportions relative to the country's current
population. (If anyone wants to get the population figures and
do the computation, let webmaster@python.org
know, and we'll present them here...) Below that is the
original message, with the relative densities.

I took your data, added a dash of population statistics, stirred in
some arithmetic and ... viola! a list of countries showing the
number of people per PSA membership.
Norway, The Netherlands, USA, New Zealand and Australia all have about
1 million people per PSA member. At the other end of the list, Japan,
Argentina and Italy have over 30 million people per PSA member. There
seems to be an inverse relationship between soccer playing countries
and their interest in python?!
