We've talked about Simple and Advanced search. The third way of searching at AltaVista is with Refine. (Up until a little while ago, this was called "LiveTopics".) The Refine button is right next to the Search button.
Some people use this method of searching all the time -- it is a matter of taste.
Personally, I find it much more valuable for getting kinds of information that otherwise I wouldn't be able to get -- showing relationships among information, like an information x-ray. It isn't precise, but when you start doing it regularly, you learn to interpret what you see. Next slide
