Beneficiaries Outside the United States

• If you are outside the United States or are thinking about moving from the United States to another country, you should read Social Security--Your Payments While You Are Outside the United States, which explains how your benefits might be affected.



• Social Security business can be transacted in many foreign countries. Please see the list of Contacts for Services outside the U.S. prepared by the Office of International Operations.



• If you are living outside the United States and you need to apply for a Social Security number or replacement Social Security card or need to change your name on your card, you can download a copy of Form SS-5-FS, Application for a Social Security Card. You can also use this application to apply for a Social Security number on behalf of a child who is living outside the United States.

• negotiates international agreements with foreign governments



• develops policies and procedures regarding the Social Security program outside the U.S.



• serves as a liaison to international agencies and associations which deal with Social Security matters



• provides programs of training and technical consultation on Social Security and related fields to Social Security officials and other experts outside the U.S.



• serves as liaison with other Federal agencies, such as the Department of State and the Department of the Treasury, on Social Security matters outside the United States.
