· Dreamcast Commercial Feedback ·
Hey TNL,
This is Doobie from #GF_Tavern. I must say, these commercials are alot better then the previous ones. I can't quit watching the Sonic DJ one......sheeze, even the tune is stuck in my head. Sega has a winner with these commercials.
William Speer
aka "Doobie"

Ah...you like those commercials huh? "Man, stay off the lightspeed!!!" "My bad!" Heh, yes, that's certainly one of my favorites indeed and I am sure the entire TNL staff has been oogling over the quality of them, as well as the gaming community. That's a great move on Sega's part to not only have these commercials aired during the last music awards of the millenium, but to get Pacific Data Images to handle the project was swift! And just think, these are only for the initial launch titles, wait until later down the road once the system is settled in the homes of every gamer, we're bound to see more from them! "It's thinking", we're playing!

Yeah me again...
I got Toshinden 4 and it....well sucks...I don't really want to say anymore about it. Get a copy and don't waste you 60 bucks like i did.
NNX1

Hmm, that bad eh? You know, I've heard CD's are known to gain some excellent flight when flicked from high altitudes! Heh, seriously though, we would like to hear about it (that is, if you can actually contain from being profane and simply writing in the entire review: "it sucks!". That's what our Reader Review program is for, you should take advantage of it and dish out your opinion on it, just be sure to put in the ratings: Overall, Graphics, Sound, and Gameplay on a scale of A-F. Thanks for the tip, maybe now I can use that extra cash to buy Rise of the Robots over at Funcoland! :P

Hey, what happened to "Dear Bahn?" or you know..that normal greeting people usually get, huh? Just kidding! · Zero 3 Saturn Modes/Orgin of Bahn ·
Does the Saturn version have all the modes available like DC, or do you
have to work/wait for them ala PSX? Also, is "Bahn" from the guy in the
Fighting Viper series?
Cheers...
Chilip Chan

All options are automatically available and don't have to be unlocked in PlayStation, just as the Dreamcast version. The Saturn version has just about all of the modes. The Dramcatic Battle was shifted from the Survival Mode set of options (which holds 10, 20, 50, and XX matches). However, to play Dramatic Battle with two players or with the CPU, you must access the Dramatic Battle Option, which house the Ken/Ryu, Juni/Juli battles. Furthermore...the 2-1 option is not present since the Saturn only has two control ports.
No, actually Bahn comes from the planet Alderan, which unforunately was destroyed by a mysterious being which heavy breathing and wears a black tunic! His name escapes me at this time though.

· A Perspective on Arcade Gaming ·
One example is Cyberbots. It was not released here because it did poorly
in the test locations. This should not dictate if it should be relased in
the U.S. We all know that the arcades are dying rapidly and cosole gaming is
catching on like wild fire. Look at Night Warriors. It didn't do well in
test locations but was hugely popular on the home market in the US. Can't
Capcom think of better ways to introduce games into the US besides the
arcade? They could let you play home version demos of arcade games on a
console in a videogame store. Isn't this a possible solution? If they did
this who knows, Cyberbots could've sold big on the PlayStation and Saturn in the US.

Actually, a lot of companies practice this often with their games. Some examples
are Namco (Tekken and Soul Calibur, of course), Midway (NFL Blitz), and Sega.
It's not surprising that Cyberbots wasn't brought here; if the game did poorly in
tests in Japan, I could understand why it wasn't translated onto the PSX or Saturn.
Game companies have to be careful about what games they release nowadays, because
the consumer is more aware of what they're getting themselves into than 5 years ago.
If Namco or a Konami brought out a game that tested poorly in their test locations, then
chances are the game won't sell that great because of that fact. Hope that helps you
out!

· Colored Manuals in Capcom fighters·
I know this is a pretty silly question but it bothers me nonetheless. How
come Capcom japanese games get those pretty color manuals. VS had it, XvSF
had it MvSF had it and SFZ3 had it. But all the US versions of theses games
manuals were black and white(except for Zero 2 which was in color). Why is
this. We support Capcom just as much as Japan and put up with their countless
sequels of Street Fighter. Why should we not get color manuals?

It's all based on cost really...Capcom Japan doesn't mind spending the extra
few dollars take to produce color manuals for their games, but it seems that
Capcom USA does mind. Also remember that the fighting game scene is much bigger
in Japan than it is in the US (to a per person ratio, that is ^^;) and therefore
deserves some special attention (in Capcom's eyes). It would be nice for companies
to make more full colored manuals over here, but don't get too offended by it, it's
just a small detail.. afterall, at least they aren't taking anything out of the actual
game ^_-

· Bahn's what? ·
Bahn has to be full of it!
The best SEGA news ever was when they fired Bernie Stolar!
He stunk!
Chilip Chan

First off, I am not full of anything. Besides oxygen, chromosomes, and those other things you really don't need to know about, because...they're in your body too...I am reporting news exactly as it occurred.
Yes, perhaps Bernie Stolar being ejected from Sega is good news, that's an opinion, and not necessarily the views shared here at TNL (or the gaming community for that matter.) However, the report of what Mr. Isao Okawa reported was pretty big news...whether you ackowledge this as a marveled news highlight is your business.

· Capcom Jipped Saturn Zero 3? ·
When i got [Zero 3] for the Saturn I was dissapointed. The VS screen was
choppy at times, there was slowdown, loading was long in World Tour mode and
was even present for that matter! Also animation was missing like Karin
jumping out of an helicopter. How could this not be a perfect port? Isn't six
megs enough. X-men vs. Street Fighter was perfect and it had way more
animation than this game. Even the PlayStation handeled this game well. How
come this wasn't arcade perfect with no load times?

Ah, the first of what perhaps will be many disappointed Saturn owners, pull up a chair mate!
As much as I gave an honest review of the game, I share your pain. It was bad enough that for one, it took this long for Saturn owners to finally get a conversion of Zero 3 (while PSX/DC owners have enjoyed their versions for a year's time in total)..then, when the moment arrives - screams of chaos! The game can be enjoyed by the non-critical gamer sans the gradual slowdown, lack of a stage select, and other minor fallacies (in other words...the game may seem as if it's not choppy in certain areas...but it is!)
To make a point though, X-men vs. Street Fighter does not have more animation then Zero 3. Before you get ready to write us another letter telling us how wrong we are, here are the reasons why.
- More characters, X-men vs. SF (19) - SF Zero 3 (33) Though if you really want to be technical, ok, Evil Ryu, Cammy, Jun/Juli, Ken and Akuma borrow frames...
- More animation in Zero 3 specifically because all the characters from Alpha 2 were given additional frames making it resemble more or less the aspects from Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo where characters possessed proximity moves (i.e. moves which only will be initiated when you are close to the opponent)
- More stages...a minor reason..but existant none the less...X-men vs. SF
Regardless...6 megabytes should have been sufficient. It's obvious this game was rushed, and that as much as it's an exceptional version (and one of the last great titles to hit Saturn), it certainly could've been better.

· Modems n' Fighters ·
First of all I'd like to compliment your site. I get most of my info
here. So getting to my reason for writing I have a few questions. My
first question is: Will the Japan Dreamcast support the American modem? Also, I
went to the network option in Street Fighter Zero 3 and fought 3 hard
battles with Dan, Ryu and Sakura/Karin. Are these characters playable
with new Ism Pluses? Thanx for your time...
A proud member of T.I.C. video game club.
John Peterson

Thanks for the compliment, to answer your first question - the Japanese Dreamcast has not been reported to be compatible with US Dreamcast peripherals (which includes the modem). Although, nothing suggest that there is actually territorial chips integrated inside of the modem...no one has confirmed otherwise to suggest compatibility. We will provide details confirming this once it becomes available.
As for the playing with the 'Network' versions which you've encountered. You can only download these characters for battle and only earn new Isms, not the ability to actually use them tho. Should any new developments come up, you can be sure that Bonus Kun will report them promptly here on TNL. By the way, you have many more challenges which await you, head back to our news archies or use the new Search engine conveintely available on the TNL margins to your left.

Hey!
Me again...I figured since I pointed out the Kiakoh pic thing i could ask
if you guys think your gonna review Toshinden Subaru or 4...I figure the
'big' sites will overlook it but i wanna find out if its any good from
somebody....well thanks even if you do or don't.
NMX1

You again...oh no! Hehe. Well, lesse, you want to know if we're going to cover Toshinden 4 or 'Sabaru' eh? More than likely, the 'big' sites will not review this game...as for TNL. If the moon and stars align properly, and my Pick 6 Lotto hits the jackpot, there's a good chance that someone on the team will actually cover it. If and when that happens...we'll be sure to provide an extensive, detailed review for your pleasure.

Sorry Ven, SF3 3rd strike is the only game I play. I think you smoke crack and
your review on the game is a little one-sided. I travel 96 miles on the
weekends just to play the sweet game and I love it a millon times better
than 2nd Impact. Sounds like you need some good old comp. Your review just
made me take your web site off my computer. Thanks for the bad taste.
Jello Atoma

Whoa there! First off, this feedback you sent is misdirected. Not only are you mistakenly accusing our site for having bad taste, but you seem to think that Ven is a member of the TNL staff. If you wish to read a more unbiased review...then go back to TNL and head to our archives section, or click here, there you will find a in-depth review from me personally.
If you want to speak with the reader who sent in the review, then you can write us back for his address. In any event, don't stop visiting our site because you disagree with a reader reviews' submission. We in no way condone or ignore the feedback from our readers. In contrast to this feedback...why not send in your own review of what you personally thought of the game?
Thanks for writing in...we hope to hear from you soon.

· UK Dreamcast ·
Hi, I am curious if the UK Dreamcast is the same one that will be shipped to Australia. Will I be able to play a UK game on the Australian console? Any reply will be greatfully appreciated.
Sincerely,
Mark

Well actually,...it all depends on which unit you get. There are only 4 units from my knowledge available. The US version, the Japanese model and the Hong Kong model said to be able to play imports, domestic and development units (least, that's what the rumors I've heard hinted at). Finally, there is the PAL version, more than likely, this is the unit you may be receiving.
All regions have a territorial lockout chip, so just like the US version can not play Japanese games, so too with the UK games having compatibility on the Australian model. I'll do some digging for you and send you an email on the details, or will feature the highlight in our upcoming Dreamcast Buyers Guide coming up this month.

· Dragon Ball Z Games ·
Do you have any news or anything about a new Dragon Ball Z/GT game? I own a PSX and a N64 and really want to know.
Ricky Runyon
a.k.a Avalanche

You're in luck! Last year some comapny (Bandai I think) released Dragon Ball GT for the PSX. It's a polygon fighter, though I would have prefered a 2D game personally, and the graphics resemble Tobal 2 somewhat (gee, I wonder why.) I didn't get much of a chance to play it, but it has the certain awkwardness that most Dragon Ball fighting games have.
The odd thing about this game is that it wasn't called "Dragon Ball GT" in Japan, it's only called that here. The thing that makes it strange is that we're still in the Dragon Ball Z tv series, and Dragon Ball GT is years away.
You should be able to find it at any major game store, or order it online.

Hmm, you want to send us your VMA huh? How do you know we won't put in some sort of tracker to make sure you that you visit our site everyday? Or that you drink all of your milk and kiss your parents good night before you turn in? Hmm?:P
Seriously though...the person you actually need to address this to is Bonus Kun, as he's our main guy that infiltrates the Dricas server to deliver those yummy morsels of information. · Soul Calibur preview ·
Greetings!
Um, I guess I'll use "Mr. Brockington",
I just wanted to let you know how impressed I am with your preview for "Soul Calibur". Here, I was expecting nothing short of a "The girls jiggle...they beat each other with sticks...this game rocks!" sort of
preview; but the way you handled the article truly brings a more respectable,
and kinda "high-class" light to the way video games are seen. I honestly had to look at a few of the words you've written, stare at it a sec, and had the urge to grab a dictionary. The rest of the site is very well laid out, as well. The pics (dude, "Reno" has a hilarious pic for himself, that was a good episode of "That 80's Show", too...whoops, off on tangent...sorry). The designs...everything just...well, "rocks"!
Well, according to the clock on the wall, it's either really late, or Mickey has a really awkward hard-on, so I guess I'll get going. Keep up the fabulous job, because I'll be frequenting this site a lot.
Larry DuPreez
(a.k.a "CasterTroy")

Ah, you liked the preview? CasterTroy was seriously wounded, but the soul still burns! :P
Just to let you know a little secret that I lightly touched on in my preview, I really didn't like 3D fighters all that much (well aside from Tobal 2, the Tekken series, and Toshinden 2). I've always been the passionate, hardcore gamer on the 2D front, especially with Capcom's titles as my reviews here on the site testify (oh, oh...there goes the 'scholar mode' kicking in! Soul Calibur, in essence is just an awesome game! Anyone that can sit and play through the Dreamcast version and derive no form of positive feedback after a few hours shouldn't even acknowledge publicly they're a gamer! They may as well have no pulse and should be locked away in an institution! (Ok, that's a bit drastic...I suppose removing their gaming privledges would suffice!) ^_^
Have to agree with you there on Reno's pic? I love it too, and to think, he picked out all by himself! But hey, he can really dish out some sweet articles too! Be sure to look at some of his work and let us know what you thought of his work; (fyi, the entire TNL staff would like feedback on their material too ya know? I am curious what readers think of their work.) As for the design...all credit truly must go to Kenshin, his artistic skills are truly a talent I myself wish to master in the future! On his behalf, I thank you for the praise, I know that he really appreciates hearing how much our readers enjoy the site's overall look (even I never get tired of looking at it and I work here!) Take care of yourself, we look forward to hearing from you in the future, but...lose that 'hard on' Mickey watch k? Hehe!

· Gaming Info on Dune 2000 ·
Hey Guys!
Well I am looking for some information on a game. Dune 2000, which is supposed to be released 9-22-99. So far Ive tried evrything I know to see what this game is about and no one knows what Im talking about. Being a huge fan of the book series (I am assuming that the tittle of this game implies the book). I look forward to this game, maybe. Well any info is better than no info so if you can please help me.
Thanks,
Jeremy

I have the PC version of Dune 2000. Its an RTS (Real Time Strategy) game. Basically Its Dune 2 with an updated game engine. The game is from Westwood Studios (ooh good that's reminds me that i have to email them about goin there) and uses the same game engine as their famous RTS game Comand & Conquer: Red Alert. You have a choice between several races at the begining and each has their own missions that they must complete succesfully in order to become the dominant race on the planet. You have to mine spice for money, watch out for those huge desert worms and everything just like in the RTS classic Dune 2.From what i heard the PSX version, unlike the PC version, will feature 3D units. Not much besides that is known about the PSX version.

· Rockman Dash 2 ·
Hello again,
I was just lying about one day when a person on my ICQ contact list sent
me a message. The person had contacted me before because he wanted to know
some of the translation for Rockman Dash ( MegaMan Legends over here, which
I wrote FAQ for, but you knew that.) ^_^
Yeh, the silly guy imported a game without knowing much of any Japanese. Well it also seems about a week or so later, he had imported the new Tron game, which is an odd type of spin-off of Rockman Dash ( but you knew that too =P ). Here is the odd thing, he told me that the game came with TWO discs. One which was the actual Tron game and another disc, which seemed to be a Demo, which said Rockman Dash 2 !! I have not been able to get back in contact with him yet, but can you tell me if this is true? Thanks.
Antookis

Heh, it's you again huh? Quick, hide our software!
Well, it seems that you ran into the amazing Mega Man scenario! Actually, from what you're telling me, it's unlikely that your friend is lying. I haven't been made aware of the pack-in of what the Misadventures of Tron Bonne includes; but if it was said that it was included, I am sure it is. I'll have to report that in a future news article for full confirmation. Capcom has been known to inlcude demo discs with their games and since Mega Man is where Tron Bonne was inspired from, it would only seem fitting that such a disc would be included.

· About those Kikaioh pics... ·
Those Kikaioh pics you have must be from Tech Romancer (since it is coming to Dreamcast and they said they were gonna redo the graphics) because the japanese name for Tech Romancer is in fact 'Choukou Senki Kikaioh' soooo those must be redesigns for the backgrounds or something....Ok thanks cool site!
NMX1

Very smart of you to point that out, NMX1. Indeed!! Tech Romancer and Kikaioh are one and the same game and yes, those pictures are from the redesigned Dreamcast version. Quite impressive, wouldn't you say? The game also features an anime-style intro, so all you manga nerds should be on the look out for Kikaioh's animated cinemas. Obviously you have some knowledge of the Japanese language; mind coming over and helping me out through ShenMue when that comes out on import?? :) -- Arigato!!
