Q. Qualifications vs. commitment, passion and enthusiasm?
A. Are you really HUNGRY to succeed at this?
As I said before, there is probably no one single course that you can go on to learn everything you need to be a Web developer. Therefore, I argue that it follows that there are no qualifications that will guarantee you have found the right person. In any case, I would contest that finding someone with commitment, passion and enthusiasm for this kind of work will stand you in much better stead than locating a degree qualified specialist programmer. Gosh that’s biased isn’t it!? Of course if the person you find, has the enthusiasm and passion and is still yet qualified as well, then you have perhaps found someone who will be a very valuable asset to your company. You can pick out these people after a while. They will be self-motivated and will go that extra distance to get the results they want in their software. They will be hungry for success and will be high achievers. Do not be afraid to let them have some freedom but also be careful that you are able to direct their energies to motivate the whole team rather than to discourage their fellow workers. You will find it hard to retain these people for long as they have a high degree of independence. Because of this, they may not be satisfied to do the same thing forever. You need to be able to recognise these signs and to be prepared to release them without ill feelings. If you can manage to continue the relationship with them, you have the continued benefit of their expertise and they have the creative freedom to pursue their own goals. The alternative is a painful and unsatisfactory ‘divorce’ and someone who may be very gifted working for your competitors instead of you. That makes no sense.
