LYCOS, INC.'S WHOWHERE OFFERS NEW PEOPLE LOOKUPS AND IMPROVED NAVIGATION TOOLS

Significant Redesign of WhoWhere People Finder Includes Integration Into HotBot Search Site

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., October 7, 1999 -- Lycos, Inc. (Nasdaq: LCOS), the fastest growing Internet portal and the world's largest online community, today announced that the WhoWhere People Finder has added new people lookups, has become the exclusive HotBot People Finder, and has been redesigned for even easier search and navigation.

Consistently rated one of the best People Finder services on the Internet, WhoWhere (www.whowhere.lycos.com) provides email addresses, phone numbers, street addresses, personal homepage lookups, and other services for novice and experienced Internet users who are searching for information about people.

WhoWhere's redesign adds two new people lookups to the site, including a People Almanac and a search for People in the News. The People Almanac, provided by Infoplease, allows users to find information about people by searching almanac, dictionary, encyclopedia, and biography databases. People in the News is a search service provided by HotBot that offers information about people mentioned in news stories. To further enhance the user experience, WhoWhere offers improved search and navigation tools as well as new people-centric Web guides that focus on information about and services provided by people.

"With enhanced services and additional people lookups, WhoWhere is able to provide an even easier-to-use and more effective method of finding and getting in touch with other people," said Michael Armistead, general manager of Lycos' Mountain View division. "WhoWhere will also continue to extend its reach by giving HotBot users access to its helpful people-finding services."

The WhoWhere redesign includes integration into Lycos' award-winning search site HotBot (www.hotbot.com). By selecting Email Addresses or White Pages from the frontdoor, HotBot users can conduct a WhoWhere people search and access the revamped WhoWhere services.
