About ASWedit HTML editor
ASWedit is a commercial, comprehensive and easy to use HTML and text editor
for X Window System and Motif. It offers three independent modes:
a plain text editing mode and two context-sensitive, validating modes for
authoring of HyperText Markup Language documents as used
on the Internet and intranets. The two HTML modes are: standard and experimental.

The recently released version 3.0 (release date: 22 Nov 1996)
introduces or dramatically improves the following:
- HTML standard
- two new context-sensitive HTML modes: "standard" and experimental
- the "current practice" mode ("standard") is now based on HTML 3.2x
- full support for all HTML tags and attributes based on the HTML 3.2
by W3C, but modified and extended by us with the widely used elements
implemented originally by Netscape (including Frames)
(our DTD used in the "standard" mode is available)
- support for the full table model as in RFC 1942, but corrected to
support the current practice (like color cells, width on cells etc.)
in the "experimental" mode (-htmlx);
(DTD used in our experimental mode is available).
- HTML support
- new, very fast parser
(up to 100 times faster on big documents)
- display of current HTML context on the status line
- commands for finding and selecting the parent and child SGML
elements (Search|Parent, Search|Child)
- command to replace the current container element with another
one (e.g. H1 with H2)
- new 10 times faster preview mode for Netscape Navigator
- new default colors for different HTML tags
(now the elements are colored, not their background)
- separate target command
- auto insert of image width and height (GIF, JPEG & PNG)
- customizable dialog for selecting and customizing of colors
- keyboard shortcuts for many HTML tags
- automatic hex-encoding of typed special characters in URL's,
for example 'space' becomes %20 (user definable)
- on-line hints when importing and correcting legacy HTML documents
- auto correction of invalid HTML documents
- new command line options for setting the "current practice" and
experimental HTML modes ("-html" and "-htmlx", respectively)
- User interface
- auto positioning of dialogs under the pointer
(less mouse movements)
- many keyboard shortcuts
- the two main pop-up menus are now user customizable
(see
editorPopupContents and statLinePopupContents
in the resource file)
- nice insensitive icons
- fly-by hints available also for insensitive icons
- reduced startup time (by 40%)
- comprehensive context sensitive and click-on hypertext on-line
help with links now shown in color and underlined
- select all command
- new default set of toolbar icons

The ASWedit editor has a superset of features offered by asWedit, the editor which is available
for free for students and staff in education and
charitable non-profit organizations, and for free evaluation by individuals and

ASWedit is sold on a per machine basis. The number of users that can run
the software on the licensed computer is unlimited.
A license is required for each computer ASWedit will be run on.
ASWedit comes with an extensive, context-sensitive hypertext on-line help
as well as printable:
User's Guide, HTML "standard" and HTML experimental reference manuals.
The license includes free minor product upgrades by FTP for a period
of one year.
ASWedit is available for $149 US per machine (GBP95, CA$199, DM225, FRF760, ESP19000). Quantity discounts are

FTP from our ftp delivery server. With this option you do not receive the printed
documentation (nothing is shipped), but you can download it in the form of
Postscript files.

The software is distributed in tar format on a 3.5 inch UNIX diskette
or on a tape (1/4 inch, 4 mm DAT or 8 mm tape). The installation notes are included.
