Of course it is compatible. PDF = Portable Document Format. PDF Writer can generate PDF 1.1, PDF 1.2 (Acrobat Reader 4), PDF 1.3 (Acrobat Reader 5) compatible documents.

I was very happy to see this printer made for BeOS !
Thanks to you guys a lot !
But one question is still in the air:
Will you make the pdf printings compatible for
the Acrobat Reader 4-5, or is this already possible?

I'm not sure to understand what's your point here?
This driver objective is to be able to generate a PDF document from any print-aware app under BeOS, not to print PDF document files...

Your printer driver is simply great, I made a little windows program to fetch the PDF document and open it in acrobat, ready to print in the windows box.

Yep, this one was spotted too by another reporter, and Michael have checkin the fix into CVS since.
However, I don't have found time to build
a beta2 release since, but I'll soon.

Hi,
I have not gotten around to install v5.1 beta 1 until now, but
took a sneak peak at the install script.
This line in the install script puzzled me a bit, and I
suspect a script bug:
cp bookmarks/* /boot/home/config/settings/PDF\ Writer/xrefs
Should it not be:
cp xrefs/* /boot/home/config/settings/PDF\ Writer/xrefs

I'm just wondering if this is what caused my giant PDF problem; I'm not really asking to embed fonts, though I'm glad to hear that feature is included :)

A new feature in this release allows you to do what you desire; to embed any font (if it is used in the print job) you want (see Page Setup window -> Fonts -> Embedding).

Are fonts embedded automatically by PDF Writer? If so, is it possible that a system set up with Japanese support might cause PDF Writer to embed the haru fonts? They are about 3 or more MB each. Is this a valid idea?
I have my BeOS systems set up with Japanese support since I am planning on learning the language (and to read Japanese sites proper).

I must say that finally being able to create PDFs in BeOS is great! And I'm very happy to see this integrated into the OpenBeOS printing kit, as it will add a great deal of profesional level printing and digital publishing to obos (or whatever it will be called).
My question is where can I get a list of printers that support direct PDF printing? I would love to pick up a decent laser writer that will work in BeOS. Thanks again and keep up the good work, the new feature additions in this release are great!

Oups, sorry about this problem. Yep, I got it.
But no, I can't reproduce it.
With Gobe 2.0.2fr and both v1.0b1 and v1.5b1, it's output a 153Kb PDF valid file (default driver options).
If you'll have this problem with latest version, maybe we should check the too huge PDF file you get?...

The document uses no images or fills... no graphics of any kind. Who should I send the document to?

It is likely that the document uses gradient fills. Productive generates bitmaps for them when it prints the document, that could cause the large file size.

Woa.
It's not expected to generate so large file, no.
Unless you use many images in your document.
Could you send us (PDF Writer developers team) this GoBe document, so we could trace what going wrong here.

It's great to see a PDF Writer for BeOS. However, the file size on the resulting PDFs are very high. I wrote a 32k Productive document (two fonts used) and the result was 3.5 MB PDF file (at compression:none) and 2.5 MB PDF file (at compression:best). Both files did not read correctly in BePDF (first page stops rendering, and rendering is horribly slow).
Am I possibly doing something wrong or is this writer just not ready for casual use?

Not sure what you're asking, but...
You are running the install script right? On the app page, it says:
1) Expand the zip file somewhere
2) Open the newly created folder
3) Run the Install script to install the driver
If you're having trouble with the script, open a Terminal, go to the unzipped folder, and type in the name of the install script. Should work.

I just downloaded subject program and after unzipping found no extensions on the files. Thus, I was not able to install. What is that 'Needs R' that is along side the download? And what and where is 'R'?
