IGNcube's Q&A section updates with an official appearance from the new Gamecube Masta. Can you resist?

Buh?

Is the Nintendo Dolphin going to happen?

Wha-? Do yourself a favor and click right here.

MP3.

I downloaded the Peter Main MP3, but Windows Media Player says it "cant initialize a file". Is this a problem on my computer that I need to fix, or is the file messed up?
Wario_Wario@ignmail.com

We tested the MP3 thoroughly before posting it. In fact, when I got home from work yesterday I downloaded it on my house's PC and it worked fine, so I'd think it's a problem with your PC. Try downloading a program that supports MP3 playback -- a personal favorite of mine is Sonique.

Roots.

I didn't see it in any of your reports, but was there any mention or media of Catroots at Spaceworld?
Michael

None whatsoever. The game, or demo, or whatever it was, has vanished completely for the time being.

Capcom.

Hey guys,
Great site, I've been a long time fan since the days of N64.com, and I've got a question you will probably find more or less stupid. Since Capcom decided to move RE0 to da Cube, does that mean they are now an official Gamecube developer? Power Stone would reek of awesomeness if it were on Gamecube. Please answer me, as I would like to be a member of the rare update of IGNcube's Q&A sections.
E-Roq

Welcome to the club. Yes, Capcom is an official Gamecube backer and I think you'll see that Resident Evil 0 is just the first of more big-name company franchises to come to Nintendo's next-generation console.

Gamecube Shooter.

Dear IGN
I remember seeing this amazing swat/terrorists video on IGN64 about 6 months ago. I can't remember the name but it was being made by Red Storm. And the article said that it was a possible Gamecube game. Any further news on what's happened to it? And I was wondering about the music in the Space World video clip (the one recorded from the screen) -- was that music made by Nintendo or is it an actual song? Cheers.
Chris

First, the video you speak of is taken from a proposed Saffire First-Person Shooter. This little gem was presented to Red Storm as a demonstration of Saffire's SAGE architecture quite some time ago, and though I can't confirm it yet, it's now almost definitely a game in development for Gamecube. What could it be? Take a look at the video and screenshots -- I don't think you have to be a rocket scientist to figure it out. Note: when watching the video, bear in mind that it's FMV footage and not actual real-time environments.

Second, the song in the Space World video was put together by Nintendo.

Gamecube Development.

OK, this is going to sound like I'm one of those wing-nuts that cruse the web, but I'm actually quite serious. I'm a software product manager for a company that delivers on-line insurance rating software (Terribly exciting I assure you). Anyway, a group of the senior developers and I have been itching to do a game company for several years now (these are guys with 10 years of software architecture experience each, not newbies). With the release of the Gamecube we got very interested and are starting to do some of the initial legwork to set our company up. The problem we're running in to is that none of us are game "insiders." Sure we can code (well except for me, I'm a writer and managerial type) but how does one get info on becoming a developer?

Now, if this were a PC game, that'd be easy (we've actually done a couple of basic things there) but with consoles it's different. The reason I'm writing to you guys is that I'm hoping you can point me to some info. What we need is to get our hands on the Gamecube dev tools. I understand that the full kits are scarce and will be for some time, but there was mention on your site that the "tools" have been "out there for some time." This seems to imply that the software tools for actually writing code are separate from the hardware dev kit. If this is the case, how does one get said tools, for that matter, who at Nintendo is responsible for third party relations (God knows their website is mum on the issue)?

Now, I am planning on spending a lot of phone time tracking this stuff down, but right now we’re only in the initial legwork phase of this project. That being the case, I’m trying to gather as much info as I can without making too many waves. I figured you guys would be a good source of info as you always seem to be the first with the most when it comes to Nintendo coverage.

Well, that’s my rant. I appreciate you’re looking at it and hope to hear from you.
Sincerely,
Dan Willis Trap-D Software -- danwillis@mac.com

Thanks for the letter Dan. Right now Nintendo is only accepting formal applications for potential Nintendo 64, Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance development. So, unless you're already part of the company's elite or belong to a second- or third-party house in possession of said Gamecube tools, you're going to have quite a bit of trouble coming by them. With that said, if you can make a case for your company as a qualified software house with enough experience to create next-generation products, you could very well get lucky.

At any rate, the place you're probably going to want to begin your adventure is NOA's Engineering Site. This is Nintendo's site dedicated solely to system development, and those interested in becoming a licensed developer for any of the company's game machines. Of course, you'll be asked to fill out a formal application and there are no guarantees, but it's at least worth a shot.

You can also try these e-mail addresses for more information:

Developer Support: support@noa.com

Development Tools Support: tools@noa.nintendo.com

Hope that helps.

And Introducing...

Why didn't you guys update the Gamecube site yesterday? I thought you updated it every day.
Mark Halsman

A fine question indeed, Mark, and one for the newest member of the IGNcube team: the Gamecube Masta. Take it away GM.

Gamecube Masta says: Who's... da... masta? I ain't going to ask you again. Gamecube Masta makes the decisions 'round here, and if he says we don't update the Cube site every day, then we ain't going to update the Cube site every day. You got that?

Matt adds: Okay -- the GM is still a little grumpy, but in his own way he makes a point, er, sort of. The truth is that there isn't much Gamecube news to be had right now (and the same goes for N64, actually), so IGNcube will likely update every other day -- unless, of course, there is a breaking story.

I'm thinking about posting a news story on IGN64 whenever IGNcube updates as well.
