Frame Relay Access Meets SDSL

AccessLAN's SDSL concentrator slashes the cost and jacks up the speed of frame relay access

When it comes to frame relay access, AccessLAN Communications Inc. says fast and cheap don't have to be mutually exclusive. The vendor's Accesscentral concentrator uses S DSL (synchronous digital subscriber line) technology to shoot data through a single copper pair—helping cut T1 (1.544-Mbit/s) provisioning costs by 80 percent.

And speed doesn't apply to transmission rates alone. AccessLAN says customers can reduce the time spent waiting for an access line from four months to a couple of weeks, depending on the carrier. That's because the Accesscentral concentrates T1s at a point closer to the customer premises—which frees carriers from installing the complex multiplexing infrastructure needed to haul traffic to their frame switches.

What's it all add up to for net managers? A chance to negotiate some deep discounts with their carriers, analysts say. But before seeing those savings, they'll have to replace their CSU/DSUs with units from AccessLAN (San Jose, Calif.). There are two reasons: SDSL technology uses a completely different encoding scheme than today's T1 circuits, and there's currently no SDSL standard. Further, interference between cable pa irs can limit speed if the customer premises is more than 8,000 feet away from the central office.

SDSL Spells Savings

The Accesscentral 2000 sits in each central office and can handle up to 840 subscribers. The vendor supplies a range of modules that combine data from subscriber lines and shunt it onto a DS-3 or HSSI (high-speed serial interface) trunk for backhauling to the frame relay network. At the subscriber end, connections are established by running SDSL over a single copper pair.

And that SDSL connection can benefit corporate networkers. Why? SDSL is a lot cheaper to provision. While running T1 requires use of both copper pairs in a cable, SDSL needs just one. That means carriers can run twice as many circuits through the same cable.

What's more, SDS L access lines can extend up to 8,000 feet. With T1 technology, repeaters are needed every 4,000 feet—and that can get expensive.

But there's more to the savings than the use of SDSL. Because the Accesscentral sits in all central offices, customer traffic doesn't have to be backhauled through an expensive TDM (time-division multiplexer) to get to a distant frame relay switch. It's instead concentrated at a point closer to the customer's site—and data from hundreds of subscribers is fed into a DS-3 trunk that connects directly to the switch.

This also reduces the time it takes for a carrier to provision or upgrade circuits. After all, a simplified carrier network means fewer links to configure. AccessLAN says that the carrier can upgrade a 128-kbit/s link to 1.5 Mbit/s in minutes via the vendor's remote-management software.

And that could add up to some very hefty savings for customers. AccessLAN says most carriers spend about $2,500 to provision a T1 access line backhauled ov er the TDM infrastructure—but that use of Accesscentral could reduce that to $476.

Still, net managers shouldn't expect top speeds at distances greater than 8,000 feet. Because two T1s sitting in a single cable generate interference, carriers won't see the long distances they get from HDSL systems, which carry only one T1 in a two-pair cable.

But the Accesscentral can use both pairs if required, and it works at lower speeds (down to 56 kbit/s)—which means greater distances can be reached.

How does the Accesscentral stack up against the competition? While the MAX TNT from Ascend Communications Inc. (Alameda, Calif.) also can be fitted with SDSL modules, it's limited to a top speed of 768 kbit/s on one pair. Users of the Ascend product would have to aggregate two 768-kbit/s pairs to get a full T1.

Pricing for the Accesscentral 2000 base chassis starts at $20,000. But customers will need a proprietary SDSL CSU/DSU, which adds another $850 to $1,150 to the cost. Carriers, meanwhile, will need the vendor's Accesscontrol remote management software, which costs $20,000.
