The core architecture for these processors is the same as those developed for the PC industry, providing software compatibility and a huge support infrastructure to the embedded designer. Industry standard tools suites, development platforms, compilers, debuggers, emulators, text books and training seminars all contribute to helping an OEM get their product to market more quickly.

The Intel 186 has found its way into a broad spectrum of embedded designs such as modems, public and private PBX switching systems, cellular phones, POS and handheld terminals. The architecture can also be found in many real time environments such as robotics, factory automation, measurement control systems, sensors and test equipment, copiers, fax machines, printers and medical equipment. The Intel 186 family of products, XL/EA/EB/EC, have been accepted in a broad range of applications, with over ten thousand design wins and over 100 million units shipped to date. This legacy, coupled with upgrade paths with our Intel386™ and Intel486™ embedded microprocessors ensures a path for your product's future design needs.

186 Standard Processor Family
With the 186 family of products, you can determine the cost and performance requirements for your embedded design and then choose from a wide variety of options: CHMOS, and 8- and 16-bit external bus versions.

The 80C186/188XL family is pin-for-pin compatible with the previous 80186/188 family and adds an enhanced feature set. The high-performance CHMOS process allows the 80C186/188XL to run twice the clock rate of the HMOS 80186/188 while consuming less than one-fourth the power.

186 Enhanced Processor Family
Intel designed these processors to meet performance, integration and power consumption needs. Intel created a modular core architecture in order to easily proliferate the family. The 80C186Ex family features an improved 1-micron static core design, and all of the enhanced products run at 25 MHz. In addition, the Ex family products incorporate features such as serial channels, DRAM refresh control and power management to provide more functionality. The Ex core has also been enhanced to run at 3 volts.
