What year had the most hurricanes?

In August, 1999, reader Jill Crain asked us:
What is the greatest number of hurricanes formed in any year? What year was it? Several of us are having a debate over this. What name did it get to?

our answer:
Since good records have been kept, starting in 1871, The 1995 season had the second largest number of tropical storms (19) and the second largest number of hurricanes (11). The final storm that year was Tanya, which became a hurricane in the central Atlantic in late October, and then was reclassified as an extratropical cyclone on Nov. 1 when it moved north of the Azores.

The most tropical storms was in 1933 (21), before storms were named, and the most hurricanes was in 1969 (12).

On Aug. 27 and 28, 1995, there were five tropical cyclones in the Atlantic Basin, a modern-day high. Importantly, five of the hurricanes that year became major hurricanes (Category 3 or stronger). Seven tropical storms and six hurricanes affected land; three tropical storms and two hurricanes made landfall in the continental United States. There were 122 deaths overall.
