reference books, with good pictures that aren't oversized, helpful graphics,
and simple text. Tendency to simplify leaves some complicated matters

grade about force and equilibrium. All these seemingly disparate topics
are explained in this book that bridges the gap between introductory
cuteness and technical boredom. It's a book for people who know a little
about science and want to roll up their sleeves on topics that not everyone
is interested in. For example, the book does a fine job explaining the
nature of waves, though makes no mention of the far more popular topic

Our review: This longtime favorite has been revised. Kids love it because
the illustrations are fun and lively. You'll love it because your child
will learn from it. One nice thing about this book is its consistency;
unlike many science reference books, this one is all illustrated by
the same person. Ages 9-12 (but it's such a cool book we couldn't resist
putting here in the grown-up section, too). $21.00
