We rocked. So hard.

So happy someone else mentioned Tenacious D. Living in NYC, I don't get a chance to see or speak about Tenacious D as much as I would like. I think two or three years ago they ran a special on HBO featuring the fellas of Tenacious D. Basically light sketch comedy centered around their performances. Anyways i saw these while chemically altered and it burned into my head. I thought I had made it all up as a result of better living through chemistry.

One night last year I was out with a friend and his roommate from college and I made a comment about having to get my spine pierced right after my clog dancing lesson was over. To which my buddy's roommate replied that he was running late and would I mind taking him over to his Satan worshipping group. I had found another fan.

And all this time we thought we were the only two who happened to be awake when HBO ran the special that one time. Anyways last August they played here, and I went and damnit, it was good.

Just letting you know that the D touches us all. Keep up the good work.

EGGMAN

I saw them when they were in SF last, too. They played at the Maritime Hall (which I normally hate, but whatever), and it was one of the funniest shows I've ever seen. They played every single song they knew. In fact, when we all screamed for another one, they told us they couldn't, because they actually didn't know anymore songs. It was such a great show. Glad to have another fan around the ol' letters page!

I need to go find my rhythm and drink some rocket sauce now.

- Leah

PS – Always record. Always record.

Not my fault, I swear

You didn't print my letter! Now the trauma from this insignificant event has sent me into a drunken tailspin of corruption and innocence lost! I'm typing this message from facedown in the gutter, and it's all because of YOU! Oh, kidding! And yes, I know you can't print my letter every time.

You know what? I didn't think I really had a favorite piece of clothing, but just Tenacious D today I found my favorite jacket in a closet that I thought I had left over at my folks' house. It's not a fancy jacket by any stretch of the imagination, just a green and navy blue cotton jacket. It's hella comfy and warm, and it just gives me a nice feeling whenever I put it on, and that's what's important. I don't know why I love it so much, but I just do.

I'm not really look at porn much, but I'm still only human. I think that's all I really ought to say.

Andrew

Andrew, you know what's weird? The letter you sent me yesterday arrived after this one! So blame it on the ISP. And get up out of that gutter, you.

And I liked your "subtle" mention of Tenacious D. It was almost subliminal, except my eyes zeroed in on it like a homing device. Woo!

Most impressive

it's been a while since i wrote in in so here goes. First let me comment on the most recent topic Porn. Although porn has never been a big part of my life i must admit to wacthing it from time to time. It's really fun to get drunk and watch them with friends (nothing kinky though.)

The WORST show on tv has to be Pokemon and all the other lame cartoons eg. Digimon and Pocket Monsters. I'm surprised that no one mentioned that but maybe i'm the only one who still watches cartoons. And the movie, it's sad that it made almost 52 mil. it's first weekend. But that's not what really scares me, its the name Pokemon the FIRST movie. You mean that there's going to be more? Oh the humanity.

The last thing is for my most favorite piece of clothing is really a piece of clothing it's an accessory: My watch. I saved for 6 months to buy me a Movado Museum. I love it cause it goes with anything.

BTW I found the best picture of you. Remember The Great Sushi Boat Crash of '98? Jamil

How could I forget? That was a momentous occasion for me and Jaz. I'm impressed at your resourcefulness, though, I must admit. You really wanted to find more pictures, didn't you? I assume you checked out the Vegas articles for comparison purposes, right?

- Leah

Yo, the B is back

Haven't had a chance to write since the first one (even though I wanted to, for my legions of groupies. Well, ok, so my folks could see my name posted on the web). I wrote a while back, I'm the guy who read to his now ex-girlfriend, and gets to travel the country for a living. Well, I stopped traveling, and ended up in Houston, Texas, managing technicians at our branch office here. Enough babble; onto the important bits.

I am insanely jealous of your trip to the Grind, as I know of several of those bands (The Neatbeats have a special place in my heart), and will most definitely make the pilgrimage there next year. (/me daydreaming) Maybe I can make it a deal where my boss sends me there for Comdex and I get to head out 2 weeks early. (/end me daydreaming)

A question of the day for you: I have a special place in my heart for B-Movies (yes, I am a Mystery Science Theater 3000 fan), and get a huge kick out of bad plots, horrible dialogue, and poorly shot special effects. I even own Plan 9 from Outer Space (Ed Wood has a special, angora covered place in my heart). My question (*ahem*): What's your favorite guilty pleasure? You know, those bad movies that you can't help but watch over and over. Mine would have to be (and I can't believe I'm telling anyone this) UHF. I laugh my ass off every time I see it. And I can't ever tell my friends on pain of banishment (most of my friends are heavily into film and filmmaking; they'd have me burned in effigy).

And this brings me to your own QOTD: Porno is a joke. At least B-movies attempt things like plot and dialogue. A thousand monkeys at a thousand typewriters may not create Shakespeare, but I guarantee they've written about half the pornos that come out every month. A killer Italian dinner (I should send you my stuffed chicken parmesian recipe sometime), a bottle of wine, and side 2 of Dire Straits' Brothers in Arms CD (IMHO, the most seductive 35 minutes of music ever written; start at "Why Worry", and hit REPEAT. Trust me.), and you and your significant other should be getting down to business for quite some time. Besides, I prefer real women to those created in a porno lab. Silicone is NOT attractive to me.

I think I've used up my quota on parenthesis, so I'd better run, darlin'. Wow, Texas is affecting me already.

Brett

P.S. - A cry for help: Anybody in the listening audience live in Houston? If so, where does one go to listen to live music around here? Anything but country and metal is encouraged. And yes, I've already been to Sam's Boat.

Hey Brett! Welcome back. I am SO excited to hear you love the Neatbeats as well. Wherefore do they have such a special place in your heart (I already know why the do in mine)? You must tell me. So you're going to go in June? I'm thinking about it, but I haven't made up my mind for sure. After all, the first experience was just so cool – what if the second one didn't measure up? That would be SUCH a bummer. But definitely let me know if you're going. If I do, we can say hi!

I really like your QOTD idea. I may even use it tomorrow... it's a great one!

Glad to hear your thoughts on what's sexy, too. I'll have to listen to the Dire Straits to pass my own opinion, but that Italian meal sounds good. And all you readers, let Brett know any good Houston hints and tips.

- Leah

PS – If you have any spare Texas pecans lying around, y'all just send 'em my way!

Wow

This letter may be a bit late, but I think I'll kill a few birds with one stone (course I'd never REALLY kill anything).

Porno: I'm not legally old enough to watch it, so I don't.

Worst show on TV: Pokemon! Argh! It's not only a horrible show that I can't stand, but the way it has sucked up the minds of kids! Damn! Everywhere I go, it's Pokemon, Pokemon, Pokemon. Then I have four younger cousins who're addicted too! It's so annoying!

My favorite article of clothing: My Playstation polo shirt! I've been wanting one of these for years, and now I finally have a white shirt with a little PS logo embroidered on it.

My life saying: "Life sucks; live with it."

And finally, I have a suggestion for QoTD: what's your favorite number? Mine is PI, because logically, there should be an end to it. But it would be cool if PI really is irrational. Besides, it works well on chain letters. Heh heh. I can't forward it to 3.14159265358979323846264338327950488... people within 3.14159265358979323846264338327950488... days, so it breaks the chain.

Anyhow, please excuse my long letter, as I have nothing better to do right now, so I thought I'd answer a few QotDs.

-EK should be doing his homework, but he's too busy memorizing more digits to PI.

EK, I think you're the only person I know who hasn't watched porn because he's not legally able to. That is really, truly impressive. I mean... wow, even I sneaked a peak at my friend's brother's Penthouse when I was little. But even then I thought it was stupid!

My favorite number? Let me think on that...

- Leah

Should I even ask this question?

For adults, I think porn is alright. I mean, all guys like naked women and I'm pretty sure women like naked men. If somebody wants to spend their time searching for it, let em do it.

As for kids, I think it's horrible! I live in Vegas, and there's a lot of stuff kids can get into(I'm sure you know by your visit). For instance, there's numerous stands near the strip where there's free ads of strip clubs (with nudity and all). There's nobody regulating who gets it and kids can walk away with one real easily (they're free by the way). This is really bad since there's a lot of stuff that attracts kids to the strip now (movie theaters, arcades, amusment parks). There not as rampant any more since the city has tooken most of them off the street. The Internet is really bad and I could probably write a whole paper on this, but I'll spare you and move on...

The worst show on TV has to be Jennifer Love Hewitt's show, Time of Your Life. It's like teen dramas cheesed up with huggy, feely crap and the plot is mainly her jumping around being cute. I think Jennifer Love Hewitt has figured out that being hot want give you a good TV show.

~Michael typed this whole letter with his left hand, forgive typos.

But, um, what were you doing with the right hand? Or do I want to know?

I think you're right about the availability of porn to kids. Not that I think we should hide sex from kids (I think straightforwardness and honesty are important, if you haven't noticed). But kids shouldn't be checking out porn – there's too much confusing stuff in there that they're probably not emotionally mature enough to understand! Vegas really is a weird town.

Slackjaw and the D

it's a slow week at work...thus, another letter from kracky...

is porn quality entertainment or totally stupid? i think the answer is a little from column A, a little from column B. porn is quality entertainment because of it's total stupidity. i mean, in a purely utilitarian sense, porn can come in quite handy when one needs to rub one out, but there's really nothing funnier than a bunch of drunks sitting around watching a skin-flick. back in college, we used to observe a ritual known as cheap beer and porn night. we'd get a bunch of high life or PBR on a thursday night, sit around and watch a low-quality adult films. the best one ever was Perverted Stories 15, which featured a vignette called "Crazy Skulls." if you can find this video, rent it. it is the most hilariously absurd thing ever. plus there's a lot of scrompin'. there's also one called "The Cellar" which features a midget in a chicken suit who snorts coke, drinks 40s, and eventually gets his head blown off. i think you can see where this is going. if you're watching it by yourself, there's really only one thing to do with porn. But when you're drunk and bored, it makes for some hi-quality hi-laritiy.

mad props to leah, a fellow "D" fan. you reign supreme. i saw them in DC at the 9:30 Club a few months back. funny as hell! as well, my hard drive at work is clogged with numerous Tenacious D MP3s. also, my friend jappy from DC (the one responsible for my nickname) thanks you for posting yesterday's message, as he found it quite funny. plus he's a big slackjaw fan.

k.

Tell your friend to write in and he can see his own name in print. We can create our own little D-club here on the letters page. Thanks to all y'all, I've been listening to my D MP3 files I downloaded. I even had one as my answering machine message for a while! So there's definitely some supreme reigning going on for sure. Slackjaw actually played here last Saturday with my friend's band, but I missed the show. Doh! I had other plans... poor li'l me.

I think porn can be funny too, but usually just for the titles. Like the Edward Penishands triology, and super special ones like Manrammer. Yikes!

- Leah

It's not a tumor

QotD--Porn is neither quality entertainment, nor is it stupid. It is there for a purpose. I had to sit and explain this to many of my female friends, and several of my male friends. It has bad acting, because no one watches the acting. It helps satisfy people's cravings (more men than women, but women too) for different, without having to actually cheat.

Personally, and this is my little rant, people should be a whole lot more open about sex. For that matter, people should be a whole lot more open about a whole lot of things. Like children's literature. But anyway. To take from Dr. Ruth, and an Arnold movie, boys have penises, girls have vaginas. Get over it.

--Khyle

I definitely agree with your last paragraph Khyle! That's why I try, over in my other columns, to be pretty straightforward, frank, and open about what's going on with sex. I think, however, that people also need to address the emotional aspects of sex. That's something that doesn't get discussed nearly as much as it needs to. What do you think?

As for porn, my opinion is seriously mixed. There are issues with objectification and degradation... but then there's the concept that maybe it does help keep people from cheating/straying. It's not a black and white issue for me. Perhaps I should editorialize about it in a future column?
