Innovation Controller Memory Pak

The battery-backed pak is one of the worst memory paks out there.

February 23, 1999

We've said it before -- and we'll say it again. Stay away from third party controller paks. The day we get our hands on a non-Nintendo made memory pak is the day we'll put up its review as our lead story.

The latest peripheral designed to store your game saves comes from Innovation. Simply dubbed Innovation Controller Memory Pak, this pak features an internal CR2025 Lithium battery to prevent data loss. Sounds promising so far, doesn't it? Using two different test versions (a green one and a gray one), we experienced data corruption in only four days of use. Additionally, one of the two memory paks was slightly larger in physical size and tended to get stuck in standard Nintendo controller slots. We had to use additional tools to remove the pak, damaging the controller's casing in the process.

The bottom line: Let's not devote anymore space to this utterly useless piece of plastic. Gamers expect an easy fit and reliability from a memory pak, especially at this price. Despite the addition of a back-up battery, The Innovation Controller Memory Pak fails to fulfill these criteria and suffers from data loss and compatibility problems with every second game we tested.

Don't buy this piece of trash, no matter at what price.
