A quick update to N-Query proves that Matt hasn't forgotten about it entirely. Today: Hawk, Freelancers, Rocket, Dolphin and more.
Skating into 2000.
Hey, I need your final word on this. Another site says Tony Hawk's Pro
Skater is coming to the N64 this month, but you have it slated for a March
2000 release. When is this game going to be released for the big N? Thanx.
Rob (120 lbs. of twisted steel and sex appeal)
Tony Hawk hits Nintendo 64 March 2000. If you're expecting the game to come out this month, you're setting yourself up for a big letdown. I made the trek down to Activision's Los Angeles offices on Friday and the game is still too early to preview. It's being developed by Edge of Reality (Monster Truck Madness 64) and Activision seems confident that it'll be just as good as the PlayStation version, if not better.
Funny story, by the way -- I walked into Activision's offices wearing the Thrasher: Skate and Destroy T-shirt (one of the competition's games), and ran smack-dab into Tony Hawk, who happened to be visiting the studios. I was laughed at and mocked by Hawk and a group of skaters he was hanging out with. I can't be sure, but I think the skateboarder (and friends) was there to offer advice on a sequel, which is no doubt in the works. Perhaps it'll arrive for both PlayStation and N64 simultaneously this time around.
Freelancers.
I'm pretty sure that I check IGN64.com every single day. However, I never saw any mention of "Dean Austin" getting a job there. Who's place is he taking and why?
He's one of our freelancers. As IGN64 grows bigger, we're in a position now where we can actually pay other people to do our jobs. And yet we still get paid. It's almost too good to be true. It's pure genius.
Note: I'm laughing maniacally.
Just in Time for Christmas.
Hi! First of all, I love you site and I think you guys have good taste in games. Which is why I'm asking you this. I already have Jet Force Gemini and I'm planing on getting DK64. There are so many other great games coming out this holiday season, though. Rayman 2, Rocket:Robot on Wheels, Rainbow Six, Harvest Moon 64. Need I continue? I'm able to get one more game, in addition to JFG and DK64. So my question is this. Out of all the great holiday titles (besides JFG and DK64) which one should I get? Your opinion means a lot. Thanks in advance.
I'm finishing up a N64 Holiday Buyer's Guide today, which will be posted online before the end of the week. All of the games you should know about will be listed, previewed, categorized and the like. I'm probably going to be putting up a N64 Games to Send to People You Hate Guide as well, so be sure and look for that.
Confusing Reviews.
Hey guys. I just read your review of Rocket: Robot on Wheels and I just
looked at GamePro's review and they are totally different. After reading the
hype you guys have given this game I expected a great game. Your review says
that the controls are outstanding but GamePro gave it a 1.0 out of 5. How
can there be that big of a difference when it comes to control??? I was
going to buy the game but I'm not sure if I'm going to now. What should I
do?
MystikalTC
There is always going to be differences of opinion, of course. However, to rate Rocket's gameplay a 1.0 out of a possible 5.0, to me, just seems ridiculous.
I would suggest renting the game. Play around with it for awhile and I think you'll agree that control is not an issue.
Expansion.
Hey Matt,
I am getting DK64 and was wondering if I should remove my old 4MB Expansion Pak in favor of the new one that will be included in DK64. Would the newer one be more "updated" and/or better than the old one? Thanks for answering!
juddgibby@aol.com
The Pak will work identically to the one you already own. There is no reason to replace it, unless you like smell of new products better.
Sp... Err, Rocket.
Hey Matt! Congrats on the search engine but a big minus on the popups. Oh
well, I'd rather have this than how it was before... Anyways, I was
wondering if you knew why Sucker Punch changed Sprocket to Rocket? I think
Sprocket was much catchier (like Mario, Crash or Sonic) than Rocket, which
is much more generic (like Bill, Bob or John).
Sucker Punch decided to change Sprocket to rocket due to copyright problems. It seems the name Sprocket was already trademarked by another company, and Sucker Punch didn't feel like being sued. Hence, we have Rocket: Robot on Wheels.
Promoting Dolphin.
Doesn't the fact that Nintendo is spending all of that money promoting the
Dolphin for 2000 mean anything? Why would they promote it for 2000...if it
wasn't even coming out in 2000? Am I asking a stupid question? Could it
actually make the release date or is this just setting up the market and
prepping them for the later release? I am a little confused. Please print
this...you never print any of my damn letters, which are much better than
some of the crap you do print. Thanks...your site is the best.
jim
The fact that Nintendo is supporting Dolphin and its 2000 lineup does seem to indicate that the company is still aiming for a release sometime next year. At the same time, internal reports from numerous developers indicate otherwise. So, it's a bit baffling in the end. For a few more interesting details, be sure and read today's story on the ArtX-developed graphics architecture for low cost PCs.
N-Query returns in full tomorrow.
