Integration On The Net

CrossWorlds extends enterprise application tools

  • C rossWorlds Software Inc. extended its enterprise application-integration tools last week to support application links between businesses over the Internet.

CrossWorlds e-Business will integrate Extensible Markup Language and electronic data interchange support technology from extranet software provider IPNet Solutions Inc. CrossWorlds will also develop its EAI Connectors for packaged Web business applications, the first being online procurement apps from Commerce One Inc. Future plans call for Connectors to integrate SAP's B2B applications and Web-based procurement and one-to-one marketing products from Ariba Inc. and BroadVision Inc., respectively.

EAI vendors have seen their business slow recently after rapid initial growth, and analysts say the Internet is a good place to turn to for a jump-start. "If you're going to do E-business, the first thing you need to do is integrate the parts of your enterprise that have never been integrated before," says Joshua Greenbaum, a principal with Enterprise Applications Consulting. "And when you talk about online trading communities, EAI vendors should do well because there's so much out there to be integrated."

CrossWorlds e-Business will put the vendor in direct competition with Extricity Software Inc., which changed its name from CrossRoute last year in part to avoid confusion between the companies. Extricity's Alliance product for integrating the applications of supply-chain partners over the Net has sold mainly in the high-tech manufacturing industry.

CrossWorlds e-Business will offer integration to two markets: virtual enterprises and extended enterprises. The first involves connecting a host business with outsourcing partners such as contract manufacturers; the latter encompasses the entire supply chain of the host, its vendors, and its customers.
