XML, the Extensible Markup Language, is much more than just a markup language. An XML page looks something like an HTML page, but there the similarity ends. XML uses HTML-style tags not just to format documents, but also to identify the kinds of information used in documents, so that information can be reformatted for use in other documents and can also be used for information processing.

Implement XML technology using the Java^TM programming language, and you've got something even more powerful: XML with cross-platform capabilities built in at the binary level, so that even the tools you use to parse and debug your XML code are platform-independent. In the words of Jon Bosak, generally known as the father of XML technology, XML and Java technology are "the yin and yang of cross-platform XML technology."

To put that another way, the ability of XML to represent data portably complements the portability of Java technology -- and because of this, countless XML-oriented applications are being written today in the Java programming language. READ MORE
