Serial Communications
reviewed by Kief Morris
Serial programming is one of the most daunting tasks in development, and C Programmer's Guide to Serial Communications provides complete coverage of the topic of asynchronous communications.
January 8, 1997
The book starts out with the fundamentals of the subject, making sure programmers have a thorough understanding of how it works. This includes discussions of ASCII, error detection, X-Modem, flow control, UARTS, modem protocols and compression. The book also discusses facsimile in depth. This material may even be of interest to non-programming propeller heads, or non-C programmers, since it doesn't involve any actual coding or algorithms.
It's only in the second half that author Joe Campbell rolls up his sleeves and gets into programming. The code is all in C, with particular attention to making it as ANSI compliant as possible, and therefore portable across platforms and compilers. The programming section of the book includes details on constructing a basic serial I/O library, and a great deal of attention to the formatting of data, input and output, and interrupt I/O. Coverage of programming smart modems, the XModem transfer protocol, CRC, and faxing is excellent, as well as even weenier topics. There is a massive amount of code in the book, and while it doesn't come with a disk, there is an order form to get a disk with all the code directly from the author, for $35.
