Sensei's Log Issue #16

Well, we FINALLY saw a good movie: THREE KINGS

Honestly, from the preview of the movie, Sensei and I both thought it looked lame, but people kept telling us how great it was so we ended up going to see it anyway. I was pleasantly surprised.

The setting is Iraq in the immediate aftermath of the Gulf War. The film opens on the day of the official cease-fire, as three American soldiers (Ice Cube, Mark Wahlberg and Spike Jonze) find a hand-written map stuffed into the (cough) rectum of an Iraqi prisoner of war. They soon discover that this map shows the location of millions of dollars in gold bullion that Sadaam Hussein took from Kuwait and hid in a bunker in the middle of the desert. Under the supervision of a Special Forces officer (George Clooney), they decide to take the gold for themselves.

So, the group takes a really cool looking Humvee and they jet out across the deserts of Iraq. But when they reach the city which has the gold, they realize they're in for much more than they bargained for. The people in the town are being tortured and killed by Saddam's troops and though they're not supposed to get involved with Iraq's internal politics, they can't just standby and watch women and children be slaughtered. As their morals take over, the four men find a new mission, which is to transport almost 100 Iraqi women and children over the border to Iran. I won't tell you the end obviously, but it was a good one.

The lead actors gave a great performance, but one of the best parts of THREE KINGS was the unusual camera work and lighting. It gave this film emotion and reality. It's a powerful movie and I think everyone can enjoy it.

Sensei's take:

This movie was very good. Like linuxgirl mentioned, I thought from the previews that this movie was going to see the same fate that Iron Eagle 2 saw--my a$$ walking out the door. I've only walked out of a number of movies in my time Iron Eagle 2 was one of em or maybe it was 3? They both sucked so it doesn't matter. However, Iron Eagle 1 is a classic :).

I give Three Kings: 3 chops

Sensei gave Three Kings: 4.5 chops

The rating system used at Linuxnewbie.org consists of a highly complex techincal data set that is statistically generated over a skew of linear probes comparing that with nuclear composites and then multiplied by 3. After that timely process, I basically give my opinions and rate a number of chops out of a possible 5.
