Mission & Partners

This site was developed to become a centralized, collaborative venture that allows people anywhere to view and participate in streaming video presentations of research seminars originating from a small, distinguished group of institutions. The initial set of partners are : School of Computer Science, Carnegie-Mellon University; Dept. of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Massachusetts Institute of Technology; Microsoft Research; School of Engineering, Stanford University; Dept. of Computer Science, University of Washington; and Xerox Palo Alto Research Center.

The Multi-University/Research Laboratory (MURL) Seminar Series grew out of informal discussions between Raj Reddy, John Hennessy, Ed Lazowska, Gordon Bell, and Anoop Gupta at the ACM'97 conference in San Jose.¹ The group sought a centralized, easily-used venue to advance streaming video technologies, and to change and improve the delivery of education and information.

Among the goals of the partnership:

Increase awareness among researchers everywhere about the recent advances in the availability of streaming video technologies;

Provide access anywhere, at any time, to the rich, distinctive seminars of the partner institutions;

Investigate the potential of streaming video and collaborative technologies to change, and improve, the delivery of information and education;

Explore the social and communication issues that may arise from increasing the audience for seminars that are traditionally targeted to smaller, face-to-face groups;

This project will obviously not be successful without the exciting talks given by the numerous individuals speaking in the presented seminars. We thank all of them for participating in this experiment to share and spread knowledge. We would also like to thank Microsoft Research for generously supporting this project.

¹ Raj Reddy is Dean of the School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University; John Hennessy is Dean of the School of Engineering at Stanford University; Ed Lazowska is Chairman of the Computer Science Department at the University of Washington (Seattle); Gordon Bell is a senior researcher at Microsoft Research; Anoop Gupta is also a senior researcher at Microsoft Research, and an Associate Professor of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering at Stanford University (on leave of absence).
