PowerPak

Power your Game Boy Pocket with InterAct's Performance battery pack.

June 28, 1999

Hardcore gamers know that even the most hyped-up batteries give up after two day's worth of instensive Game Boy gaming. As an alternative to disposable batteries, InterAct has devised a new rechargable battery pack designed for Game Boy Pocket, called the PowerPak.

The peripheral, which is sold under InterAct's Performance brand, plugs into the Game Boy's battery compartment and enables around eight hours of continuous gameplay. When the power runs out, you simply plug the included AC Adapter into a standard electrical outlet and recharge the battery pack. This takes around 10 hours. An LCD screen on the bottom of the unit shows the charge status. You can of course also charge the pack while you're playing.

If you're like us and you constantly misplace your Game Boy's battery hatch, you'll be happy to hear that the PowerPak enables you to attach the hatch to its back for safe keeping.

Unlike the much larger version for the Game Boy Color, the Pocket PowerPak doesn't protrude too far from the bottom of the Game Boy. Overall, the Game Boy Pocket still feels more comfortable to hold without the PowerPak -- but the included AC Adapter makes the PowerPak a good value for only $19.99. If you can, try if you can live with the extra piece of plastic attached to your Game Boy before you buy.
