GameShark Pro

Not to be outdone by knock-offs, the original PlayStation cheat device is getting an overhaul

April 5, 1999

InterAct used the Game Developers Conference in San Jose to introduce game developers and the press to its latest GameShark device, the GameShark Pro Video Game Enhancer. And as much as we hate cheating in games, the GameSharkPro does a lot more than just let you cruise through the games.

Like its predecessor, the device plugs into the PlayStation's parallel port on the back of the system. When switching on the console, the GameShark Pro menu will appear instead of the PlayStation boot-up screen, and offer owners the ability to enter codes for their favorite games that enable invincibility, more lives, level access and so on.

But the GameShark Pro doesn't stop there. Using a simple menu system, players are now able to produce their own codes by searching for numeric values (such as the current number of lives) and isolating the right data through a simple process of elimination. Although it's very simple, InterAct will include a "How to" video with the device when it ships at the end of this month.

The GameShark Pro also features a very unique feature: V-Mem. If you're out of memory cards, plug in the unit, and go into the V-Mem option. There, you can choose from eight virtual memory cards. What this does is trick the system into saving games in progress to the GameShark Pro instead of the memory card slots. The easy-to-use interface makes it a cinch to see where your saves will go.

You'll also be able to "explore" a PlayStation CD, viewing embedded images, video clips and music soundtracks normally inaccessable to the user. It won't open up everything on the disc, but it's cool to discover some hidden music and video.

  • Pre-Loaded with 1,500 codes for more than 350 PlayStation games.
  • Built-in code generator.
  • 4MB of memory to save thousands of codes internally.
  • V-Mem function acts like eight virtual memory cards.
  • Optional PC hacking feature.
  • "How to Hack Like a Pro" video.

The GameShark Pro is slated to retail for $49 and will ship later this month. Stay tuned for a full preview.
