New Drivers! NVIDIA has released new 6.18 "Detonator 3" series drivers, good for the TNT/2, GeForce/2/MX, and Quadro series of chips. Click here to grab the Win9x/Me drivers by FTP. They are claimed to provide up to a 50% improvement in some cases for DirectX 7 and OpenGL games.
NVIDIA continues their battle for industry dominance with the surprise announce of the GeForce2 Ultra, a one gigapixel per second, two gigatexel per second monster chip. It also happens to feature a RADEON beating 31 million triangle per second capacity. Creative Labs will launch one of the first boards in September.
JWK and I probably won't be updating RE anymore so we can get busy working on our own sites. I am designing a successor to RE, which should launch soon. Later, I have plans for a very big, ambitious, new PC/Console 3D gaming site. I'm looking for several good writers, preferably American with previous experience with writing for gaming sites.
Got Nvidia news?

| | Some Irish guys make a $5 mp3 chip [Edited by Greg & JWK] - 7.22.2000 - 11:31am PST
| OVERCLOCKING |
|
|
Pretty impressive eh, ya woo hoo, creative is going to use the chip, that was originally a regular dsp chip made 4 years ago, and use it in their new mp3's which will probably cost a butt load, just cause they can do that...anyway the irish guys went IPO a while ago, and so it looks like their makin some money or somethin, which they'll probably blow on [DELETED], but hey creative should be able to make some money off of 'em, and us too for that matter...ok lets all go out and buy mp3 players now, but lets not use napster cause you know napster is a mp3 search service, but that service could mean the distribution of pirated music could be proliferated...hey wait a minute AOL is a service, and wait a minute, isn't illegal child pornography distributed with the use of AOL as a service, or hacked software distributed through the service, that service could even be used so that teenagers could simply hop on over to ebay and buy some legal controlled substance and then O.D. on that(read news), but who would want to sue a monopoly like that anyway
HEY! check out the arcticle on the irish guys by clickin on my chodenugget
Scrapps: Forget that, I(scrapps) am irish, LOL jooky and everybody you're too funny, like I am even remotely serious. "What Scrapps wrote was out of ignorance" Mmmmm Mmmmm irish honkies like myself always are.
Greg's Edit: I must apologize for the comments posted by JWK. They were incorrect, as I will handle Scrapps' punishment. What JWK wrote was out of ignorance, for he doesn't get a joke. As one who has strong roots in Ireland (O'Daly changed to Daly via immigration), I will certainly kick McConnell's Scottish Butt.
It's funny how the King (JWK = Johnathan W. King) doesn't understand Scrapps' humor. :) I hope you guys understand Scrapps is a satirist, and part of his schtick is how he writes, spells, and all the rest. If there are any Irish fans out there, I'd be more than happy to show you a good time in Seattle.
JWK: /JWK is trying to remove his foot from his mouth. Umm... Oops?
Greg: No worries, I'm just making fun of you, which you realize is a fun game because you take it too seriously.

It's mine, All mine! - 7.22.2000 - 11:10am PST

HA, ha, now that those guys have given up and stop updating the site...it's all mine mine mine mine mine. I now have the power to offend everyone I want, like this thing WTF! a super proprietary super small super computer, i always wanted a really fast firewall, for only 2,300 bucks wtih os9, ya that operating system almost works correctly...and then there's OSX, the bsd based Macintosh operating system, wait a second there: mac running unix, this will be like watching a teletubby use a magnetic crane to parellel park their car, I can't wait to see mac users running osX, I read an article the other day from a mac user talking about osX, here's the jist: osX looks like NeXTstep and windows, but you can get this bar that makes it look like a mac, but you have to do all this work to install it, like open a terminal window!, and then cd to the file!, and then untar it!, and then make sure the directory was created!, and THEN logout and back in!, and if that weren't bad enough all the applications in the window will have an extension .app!....dear heysus, you poor mac user, just wait till you have to compile the progy, run a configue, edit the make file, put extra parameters in, and THEN! have to do a make install.....not only all of that, osX is so crap loaded full and resource hungry it runs slower than sally struthers on our little imacs....if your lucky i'll add some more bitching in later, and spell crap even worse just bug the hell out of you, cause i'm a close minded honkey, biatch

| | Halo Confirmed for the PC / Site Update - 7.21.2000 - 6:18pm PST
| GAMES |
|
|
I just saw on FGN Online that Microsoft has confirmed that Halo is coming to the Xbox, the Mac, and... the PC.
Now one thing to think about when it comes to Halo on the Xbox, is that there's no large texture support. The thing only has 64MB total. Couple that with playing it on a TV or your PC with some video-in at 640x480, and I have a hard time believing that Halo on the Xbox is going to outshine Halo on the PC, more poly's or no.
As a little side note here, JWK and I have decided to quit updating Riva Extreme in order to work on developing our own new sites. Yes, he's hooking up his own site, so I'll leave him to tell you about that whenever he's ready. I am definitely several weeks off from launch, as it's a big project with lots more to do yet. The "New RE" site is all designed now, and I think you'll love it.
I think Greg has a new MX card to review, so I'd expect so see that up here before too long.
L8z,
A*

| | ASUS To Release New Cheating Drivers? - 7.19.2000 - 10:26am PST
| GFX BOARDS | |
|
Today's visit by Riva Station reveals some disturbing and very exclusive news. It seems that Asus has the mind to release a new driver set for their V7x00 series which allows two new options: A wireframe mode, and a Transparent texture mode, both useable with hot-keys. Tell me if this doesn't sicken you to your very core. This could totally ruin playing games online! You could see through the walls of a deathmatch level and cheat your @$$ off! Skip the hot-keys, why don't they just let us bind those cheats to mouse buttons while they're at it!
Now Asus is really a company that's easy to like - they make innovative video cards and have unique software to support their special features. They definitely have some cool programmers working for them. Unfortunately this could be a major public relations blunder, should the plan go through.
Check out the full scoop over at Riva Station.

| | ATI's Radeon Tested by HotHardware - 7.17.2000 - 6:32am PST
| GFX BOARDS |
|
|
The graphics war has just gotten more interesting! Clippage: Well folks, this should start the week off with a bang! Today our man Marco steps up to give you the straight scoop on the new ATI Radeon! He went to Canada, listened, tested, had a couple of Molsens and then stole one for himself! Ok, so now NVIDIA, S3, and ATI have managed to implement T&L into a board, and 3dfx STILL hasn't... Are they gonna do the same thing as they did with 32-bit colour? Maybe they'll make a chip with the same power as a V5, add T&L, and call it a V6. Wouldn't surprise me... After all, the so-called "V4" has a feature list that reads like a V3 with 32 bit support, and support for large textures, a feature that has been COMMONPLACE since the original TNT!!!
Ok, I've gotten off of my soapbox now.Get informed!

| | X-Men (The Movie) - 7.16.2000 - 3:05pm PST
| the majik werd |
|
|
I just got back from seeing "X-Men." How was it? In a word: [Deep "Mortal Kombat" voice] excellent.[/voice] It stays true to the characters and themes of the comic, while simultaneously providing a new, orignal plot. It's like a "what if" kind of thing... It's like a story that may have occured during the flow of the comic that wouldn't have permanently affected the series. I can't say nobody dies (quite a few do, actually), but the movie has set itself up perfectly for a sequel. Personally, I find that leaving the possiblity for a sequel open didn't cheapen the movie. In fact, the movie has total resolution of the central plot, so it's a great stand-alone film. I can't wait for a sequel, if it can be executed as well as this film.
Serious X-Men fans are in for some special treats. I won't spoil them from you, but I will tell you that there are "inside jokes" in the movie to keep your eyes and ears open for. One of them revolves around Wolverine's comment on their outfits, so make sure you listen to it. I'm sure you'll laugh if ypu get it.
One hot topic of discussions before Friday was whether a complex character like Wolverine would be able to translate properly into a mainstream film. Well, they did it. In fact, Wolverine's casting was perfect. Nobody thought that the right actor was chosen, but the character was pulled off in such a manner that you would believ that the guy was BORN to play this part. I think he should win an award, or something. Wolvie's "pull-no-punches-and-don't-take-crap-from-anyone" attitude is clear, but not over-exagerrated.
Bottom Line: Unlike the "made-for-TV" movie, this film is a good movie, and fans of the X-Men simply have even more to enjoy, than the general public. The movie is solidly entertaining, never boring the audience AT ALL, so it's a good value. What are you waiting for? Go see it! J

| | Intel i815 Chipset Review @ iXBT LABS (Updated) - 7.18.2000 - 8:17am PST
| INTEL | |
|
iXBT LABS has take this new chipset, and run it through its paces. The review starts off with a summary of the latetst things that have been going on with the latest chipset generations; like what kind of RAM they supported, aFSP speed, AGP rate, etc. After that, there's a little diagram of how the new chiset is connected to the elements of the system. Of note: the items labelled "ATA 100 Channels (2)" and "2 USB Controllers (4 ports)."
[Editroial:] Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't having dual controllers seem like a bit of overkill? I mean, you're now getting 12megs*2, even though current USB devices, other than the occasionnal network adapter, never use the full speed of 1 port! Now, if the two controllers' cumulative bandwidth can be accessed through 1 connector, I may have just put my foot in my mouth. That would allow you to have 24 megs/s, fast enough for external HD's. "Firewire? We don' need no steenk-eeng Firewire!" Don't get me wrong; Firewire is great, but it's more expensive to implement than USB (at least on the motherboard side of things), and since USB is already becoming pretty standardised for new devices, it would probably be more appealing to manufacturers.[/editorial] To check out the whole review (recommended) click here.
Update: What I meant by using it for external HD's, was to use external HD's with a USB interface to easily move data from one PC to another. A small, cheap 3600 or 5400 RPM hd could transfer data at 3 megabytes/second over a double-speed USB port. 3 megabytes/second is 5X faster than a 4X CD-R! Imagine going to your friend's house, with a little leather hd case, with ALL of your MP3's, the latest patches that they didn't want to spend hours d/l'ing with their 56K modems, and all the newest demos! You'd be a freakin' HERO if you had a cable modem, and used a USB HD to get things from the internet to your friends' comps! Technically, it's illegal to give away copied programs on CD-R's, so only people who WANT to break the law would prefer NOT getting the media back. Call me crazy, but if I could go out and buy a 6 Gig portable HD with a USB interface, I'd be a happy camper. Seagate, are you listening? You're supposed to have the most resilient drives on the market, so prove it! Make 'em portable! I'll be waiting!
