SD73 contains more melodrama than action, making it something of a mellow reprieve for serious fans of Larsen's double-dipped Dragon destruction. But, hey, like all good dramas, this one's just itchin' to come to a head. Larsen bills the ish as the first part of his "End of the World" sage, which he promises to be both ambitious and epic.
As always, Larsen's artwork is on hit and his sense of comedic irony is never wasted (dig Impervious Rex, the Aquaman/Sub-Mariner combo creation with a very Stan Lee-styled name). And his Village of the Damned tribute with Darklord invading the minds and bodies of little kids is a nifty addition to the plate of weirdness that is Dragon's world. Anyway, Drag and Mighty Man launch an infiltration of the secret country club hideaway of The Covenant of the Sword, in an attempt to rescue both Baby Boom, SuperPatriot and whomever else has fallen into their grasp.
Toss in a subplot with two female Dragons, Bludgeon returning to normal courtesy of Negate, Impervious Rex attacking his own beloved Atlantis (which has been ransacked by the Norse Gods) and you've got what Larsen himself calls an issue "that features damned near everybody and ought to confuse the hell out of anybody who's unfamiliar with Savage Dragon continuity..."
Couldn't have said it better myself. If you're just jumpin' on board it might be worth your while to snatch up some of the Dragon TPB and catch up on the back-story.

REVIEW: This issue is something of a letdown, especially after all the brash sexual innuendo and the epic clash-of-the-titans-style brawl contained in the pages of last ish.
Sure, there's plenty of Dragon enhanced mayhem: a knock-down, drag-out, wham-bam fest with Mighty Man and the return of that festering juggernaut, Cesspool (you know, the big fat super fool covered from head to toe with anal openings who spews nasty sewage slop from his vocal orifice).
So, yeah, there's plenty of signature, trademark Dragon melee action, but the underlying text of the issue is all soap opera theatrics. The ish opens at a funeral, for chrissakes! From there, Dragon loses custody of his daughter Angel to her Aunt and Uncle, which sends him on a drunken binge at the local dive bar.
On the pro side, the Cesspool altercation is pretty damn bueno (it's muy violent and contains the most creative use of a bar rail I've ever seen). Oh yeah, and when a "new" Mighty Man appears on the scene (conveniently after Dragon has whupped Cess' ass) and asks ol' Green Fin to help him whup some more ass, Dragon replies: "Let me finish my beer. I'll be right with you." Classic.

REVIEW: What can you say about a comic that begins with one super freak giving the other fellatio? Boo Yaa!, that's what I say.
Savage Dragon has been one of my on-again/off again guilty pleasures for several years now. I mean it's a rock 'em, sock 'em superhero soap opera from hell, developed and executed specifically for the terminally short attention spanned individual such as myself.
At any rate, SD 71 opens with the prickly skinned Horridus exercising her mouth muscles on the Dragon's lower regions. Of course the Green One wakes up, embarrassed as all hell and quickly brushes her away spouting pithy dialogue like "Sara -- you're not even human -- it's like...like...bestiality or something." Following this little sexcapade the ish shifts to the exploits of She-Dragon as she infiltrates the Demon Dogs in the Dark-Land region in an attempt to locate the Eternal Youths. Toss in an appearance from Bludgeon (who has turned baddie for the money), the imergence of Darklord, and a slam-bang, knock-down rumble featuring the Special Operations Strikeforce and it's all about the wham, bam, thank you Erik Larsen. Know what I'm sayin'?
I mean, who could ask for more than this in a comic? Savage Dragon is the perfect antidote for those who like their comics to have a tongue-n-cheek edginess to them.
