Pika pika!

February 25, 2000

With Pokemon being the multimedia juggernaut that it is, who would we be if we didn't try to cater to that craze? When Satoshi Tajiri and GameFreak dreamed up 151 cute critters to befriend children and fight for glory, little did they realize it would become the phenomenon it is today. Around the world, Pikchu and friends are known as the AntiChrist, First Sign of the Apocalypse, The Most Heinous Marketing Gimmick Since Cabbage Patch Kids, and The Game that Saved Nintendo's Ass. With slack sales for the Nintendo 64 in Japan, the multi-billion dollar revenue the Pokemon draw in every year has kept the company's loss to a minimum, and has become the most popular entertainment on TV, in the movies, and in schools world-wide.

So what exactly are they? Satoshi made them up out of childhood visions of insects, hence the great number of insectoid and avian forms. But, with the game's full development, they've all gotten cute and cuddly.

We've got a great set of cover images from Viz, which puts out Pokemon books and comics. Why don't you see how many Pokemon you can spot?
