TV: Buffy, Faith, Hope, and Trick
Staking out old territory
June 22, 1999
Buffy's life is slowly getting back to normal when a new slayer named Faith
pops into Sunnydale. Fresh on her heels is a new undead crew including a
black technophile blood-sucker named Mr. Trick who longs to lay down some
roots (along with a couple of T3s) in our quiet little burb. His boss
Kakeestos, a vampire so old he has cloven hooves, is pissed at Faith for
sharpening a knife with his face.
It seems that when Kendra died last season, a new chick named Faith stepped
in to fill the vacancy. What's up with that? According to that mythology,
the Watchers ought to make like Flatliners, do a whole series of "back from
the dead" exercises and build an army of slayers.
What really gets me is that for ages Buffy's been moaning about how she
just wants to be a normal kid and leave this whole slayer thing behind.
Well, here's her chance... Faith is more than happy to take over the
vampire-aeration business. I just can't believe that Buffy won't
eventually take the opportunity, so the only choice is to kill Faith off.
Oops, that won't work. Another slayer will pop up.
And another thing. Dawson's Creek is on Wednesdays; enough with the teen
angst already. Buffy's best when she's kickin' ass and crack' jokes.
On a more positive note, we've got a cool new bad-guy. In the
not-so-climatic climax, Mr. Trick slips out while Ole' Goat Foot get
ventilated. I liked Mr. Trick; he's cool. Call it a je ne sais quoi ,
call it several Internet references. Whatever it is, he got what's been
missing since Spike skipped town. Note to Josh Whedon: more Mr. Trick...
and more Oz, too.
All in all, the season is shaping up pretty well. We've got a few new
characters to snuff during the year, Buffy's got a possible love-interest
and, oh yeah, Angel's back next week. Stay tuned.
