Son of Voyager

Will the next Star Trek spin-off be a continuation of the current show?

February 29, 2000

Though our sources tell us that the next Star Trek spin-off will be a prequel series, our pals over at SFX say that there's a rumor of a different sort floating around.

The site reports that Voyager may get a few more regular character towards the end of its run. These characters would form the basis for a new series, which would continue on where Voyager leaves off. This kind of thing has been done before with shows like Beverly Hills 90210 (never thought you'd read those words in a story about Trek, now did you?), which planted a character in its regular storyline in order to spin off Melrose Place. No word yet on who these characters would be, but one could speculate that such a move would also allow for Seven of Nine to continue on her merry way in the Trek universe for some time to come.

In other Trek news, franchise captain Rick Berman has been chatting it up about the next movie again. While speaking with Cinescape, Berman confirmed that there will indeed be another movie, though the storyline is anyone's guess. "Can you imagine that there will never be another Star Trek movie? Obviously, there will be another film," he said. "As to whether it's a Next Generation film or a hybrid of some sort, these are questions that have not really been answered yet. My hope, personally, is that it will be a Next Generation story, but we're still in very initial discussions on that. Where the motion picture franchise is concerned, I believe the next film is going to be very important, too. And since that's in a far less developed stage than our new series, it's hard for me to talk about it because we're just now dealing with it in very broad terms."

Which series idea is better: prequel or Voyager continuation? Why? Give us your two cents on it, and be sure to check in later for the responses! Got a question? Ask the Bug-Eyed Monster and read its answers here.
