lv writes "I'm looking to use slash to generate a news oriented web page. It'll have very low traffic and the updates will be infrequent. The problem is that I'm not in control of the webserver that serves the pages; my ISP won't allow arbitary cgi-code. I'd like to be able to use slash on my home machine to "submit" and prepare the pages and then push the HTML content to my ISP. My question is; can slash generate completely static HTML code, that is self contained, and that can be uploaded en-masse and served by my ISP?"

David Lerner writes "I'm trying to get slashcode to work on http://www.wintoxicated.com/ and it seems like any database information is randomly generated from all the previous entries I have made... for example the colors constantly shift across the site, also changes to blocks seem to take affect and leave intermittantly.
incidentally, when executing the slashdata_dump.sql command I get the following error:
"ERROR 1136 at line 688: Column count doesn't match value count at Row 1"
Has anyone seen this before? Are these problems related?
- Dave" First of all, what version of slash are you running? Secondly, the reason that you see your changes not take full affect is because you most likely didn't restart apache after making those changes. Since this is mod perl, blocks and colors are persistent, and if you change a block, or site colors, a restart is required for the code to read in the new values.

Apache::PerlVINC is a new Perl module to allow you to set specific Perl module versions to be used in specific virtual hosts. I don't know how efficient it is, how well it works, etc., but it may help some of you with your problems of having different Slash versions.

alex writes "So, the suits have been taking a look at our new Slash sites, and they are impressed. I have one going live with Slash in about 2 weeks, and one adding Slash as a community portion in about 4-6 weeks.
However, they are really interested in providing Web based e-mail to our users. They like it, and want to provide vanity e-mail addresses. Our servers are running PHP3 and mod_perl, and we have several add-ons in php3 that access the Slash database.
I would like to add e-mail relatively easily. I would like to grab the same cookie and authenticate against the same database (if possible). Does anyone have any suggestions for what they have used?
We have poked around with IMP, seems like a pain for this project, because it wants LDAP to really distribute users. Ideally, I want a webmail system that will authenticate against a MySQL database. Adapting IMP may be the way to go, but I'm looking for something less painful.
Alex"
Well, under Bender this is fairly trivial. Be a bit more difficult for the current release...

Neil Simpson writes "Having looked through all the FAQs and suchlike, I am looking for some opinions on setting up a slash site. I've had a great idea for a long time, but I'm interested to hear of the experiences of other people who have set up these sites, what difficulties they have had, and most importantly if I can run a slash site on rented server space
(I cant afford to run my own!) and how to go about it!"
