Boola, boola for the victors!
Among the 4,287 ways college football beats the living beaver snot out of pro football -- e.g., cheerleaders with real breasts, teams that don't pack up and leave at midnight, mascots who actually bite -- the best is fight songs. As they say in Texas, a good fight song'll give you chill bumps.
In pursuit of A-Rod
Can the Braves afford to spend $35 million per year on the left side of their infield? If they want to sign Alex Rodriguez this winter, that's what it might cost now that they've locked up third baseman Chipper Jones at a reported $15 million per year. But don't count the Braves out.
The shame of the NFL
There's a fine distinction made in newsrooms between a "preseason" game and an "exhibition" game. If it's preseason, it's ... OK, it's before the season. But the word "preseason" also gives the impression that the game is kind of like the season, but not quite. If it's exhibition, it's ... well, it's fake.
We're No. 115!
The preseason college football rankings are starting to arrive, and while it's nice that Nebraska universally seems to be No. 1 and Florida State universally seems to be No. 2, it is more interesting for me to note that the University of Connecticut is universally ranked last among Division I-A schools. I went to Connecticut.
A vote for the Spurs
The Spurs are the clubhouse leaders in this year's NBA free-agent hunt. They convinced Tim Duncan to re-sign, reason enough to dance on the Riverwalk. Then they convinced free-agent guard Derek Anderson to sign for the $2.25 million exception. That giant sucking sound coming from Texas is GM Gregg Popovich's sigh of relief.
Dillon not long for Cincy
What would a 26-year-old running back, fully healthy, who gains 4 1/2 yards per rush, be worth on the open market? We'll find out in six months. That's when Corey Dillon, the Cincinnati Bengals' underappreciated running back, should hit free agency.
