Star Control 3 - What Went Wrong?
This is a list we compiled that explains just exactly what we didn't like about Star Control 3 and a little of what we did like... it's not meant to offend or throw insults in Accolade's face but just a reference for what we don't really wanna see in StarCon... some of it is just us being pedantic bastards. If you object to any of the points here or want to add some yourself or just wanna comment, send mail to The Mango Maniac or Korky (actually don't, because they don't maintain this list anymore). So let's start...
Overview
- The 'main menu' opening is rather boring and not very impressive - a typical 'windows game' opening. Windows-like interface.
- It's not as fun using only the mouse.
- The "elevator music" MIDIs in the game are not as good as Star Control 2's MODs.
- The entire game is grey and lifeless, except for the planet surfaces, which are exaggerately psychadelic.
Hyper Melee
- All the ships are boring and greyish and look alike.
- Most of the ships' abilities and shots are stolen from Star Control 2. The old ships from Star Control 2 which abilities are used in Star Control 3 (such as the Yehat) disappear misteriously from the game with some lame excuse like having to defend the quadrant. Even if so, they should have at least included them in the melee.
- Ship images should have been included like in Star Control 1 (what you get when you press space bar in the practice room). This also goes for Star Control 2.
- No Ship description charts either (what was next to the image that showed you the ship's crew compliment, weapon range and damage, speed, turning rate and etc.) This too also goes for Star Control 2.
- The Kohr-Ah looks like a LEGO block.
- The so-called 'advanced' AI has one tactic: Run away.
- You can't use TAB as a button.
- Key-jamming has not yet been fixed!
- The ship selection screen could use some work.
- You have to choose the computer's ship as well.
- No "?" random choice option.
- Combat music is just as bad as game music.
- Background is ugly.
- The 3D option is absolutely useless and you can't understand a thing of what's going on in the battle.
- The ship explosions aren't too good.
- No images of the ship captains pressing all the buttons and stuff!
- Old Star Control 2 ships were changed.
- The shots look better but are smaller compared to the ships.
- The planet is too small and has too strong a gravity well.
- The asteroids are too small.
- The colony ship is not very good and should have had modifiable modules like in Star Control 2.
- Most of the new shots are 'mine' style and 'hit and run'.
- The S.M. can find the Heralds even when they cloak.
- Only 25 ships in Star Control 3 compared to 26 in Star Control 2!
Full Game - Intro
- No 'blast you off your seat' music.
- The Sa-Matra looks like the love boat.
- The escape pod looks different.
- No asteroids around the Sa-Matra.
- The intro is not at all what happened at the end of Star Control 2.
Full Game - Gameplay
- Communications screen is boring (where's that oscilloscope we all loved?)
- The creatures are ugly and boring.
- You can't review the dialogue again (pressing space bar in Star Control 2). If you missed a sentence, tough luck.
- No unique font for each race!
- The dialogue is boring and greatly lacks humor.
- The choices you have to make in the game are basically "Yes, I surrender" or "No, I won't surrender".
- No dangers on planets, you can't find anything on planets.
- All planets look the same and there are no 'types' of planets.
- No mineral collection, no biodata collection.
- You don't collect resources yourself, colonies do all the work for you.
- You can't change the configuration of your ship, no modules and your ship is too weak.
- The ship upgrades are moronic and can make some ships invincible (Doog for example).
- The races' breeding should be different for every race.
- The colonies require no actual management ability, a chimpanzee can manage them.
- No Hyperspace or Quasispace, makes the game more boring. No chance of being stopped in the middle of your journey by a bunch of pissed off Kohr-Ah.
- If you run out of fuel, you've got nothing to do about it and if there's a colony there you have to wait a long time. No Melnorme to come save your butt.
- You don't discover anything by yourself, you wait for the Tech Team to tell you.
- You can't do anything that's against the rules.
- The movie cutscenes aren't very impressive.
- The Crux are weak, stupid and are just a sitting target. They don't rebuild colonies or perform a sneak attack on you.
- The Ploxis tells me how all the races are still his when he doesn't have a single race left. Wake up and smell the coffee.
Timeline
- The timeline is inconsistant with the Star Control universe as seen in Star Control 2.
- According to the timeline, the Captain is 40 years old. this would mean that in StarCon he will be 60? 80? 120? Dead?
