Sizing Text

  • The following table describes the most common tags used for headings and sizing text:
  • Although the heading tags do size text, their use solely for that purpose should be discouraged. Headings are a good example of 'logical markup'. Note that some search engines give greater weight to words in headings. It's generally recommended that heading tags increase by one for sub-headings, e.g. h1, h2, h3, h3, h2, h2,... using h1 only once per page, matching the title.
Opening Tag/Closing Tag Description
<H*>...</H*> Creates heading text of varying sizes (from 1-6). To choose a heading level, you replace the * with a number from 1 to 6. For example, a heading level one tag would look like
<H1>heading Text level One</H1>
Headings create a block with space before and after and can an take an optional alignment parameter of LEFT, RIGHT, or CENTER [1]
<FONT SIZE = "*"> ...</FONT> You may specify an absolute height such as <FONT SIZE = "4"> or you may specify a size relative to the basefont using the increment notation such as <FONT SIZE = "+2">.[2]
<BIG>...</BIG> Like the <FONT> tag, this tag enlarges the base font size.[3]
<SMALL>...</SMALL> This tag shrinks the base font size.[3]

  • Notice in particular that the heading tags (H*) display in a 'block', with white space above and below, whereas the FONT tags do not.
