Java, Education and Open Course
So what is Open Course collaboration?
Collaboration and sharing are well established traditions in higher education. Just as academics collaborate on scientific research and publish their results freely, some are working together to build learning objects and share them with other faculty. Academic collaboration to build open learning objects, tools and standards is termed "open course" development, since it is resembles the successful open source model of software development and sometimes overlaps it.
Developing high quality educational content requires more than subject matter expertise: it demands programming skills, graphic skills, instructional design skills and a significant investment of time. It is rare that a single faculty member or even a single department would possess these skills and resources. That is why open course collaboratories of faculty, staff and students have great promise as a source of shareable, high quality instructional materials.
I plan to talk about using Java applets or other Java technology to develop reusable learning assets, as well as teaching Java itself.
