XML Update: An XML GUI Programming Tool
Help is on the way with Vervet Logic's XML Pro 1.0.
By William Gee, WebTools (06/23/98)

Extensible Markup Language (XML) promises to create a new generation of intelligent Web applications by letting developers create their own coding systems to track and manipulate information. But so far, most people creating XML documents have had to type out the custom tags themselves.

Hand-coding XML can be a humbling experience. My initial efforts creating a WebTools XML demonstration were riddled with typos. Hunting for XML syntax errors doesn't take long for small files, but as the code grows, debugging becomes tougher. I've been looking for an easy way to build XML data sets without resorting to Notepad.

Help is on the way. Vervet Logic recently shipped XML Pro 1.0, one of the first commercially available XML editors. It offers several advanced features missing from XML's leading authoring tool, Notepad. You can create the XML elements and attributes that define the document structure by hand or with a wizard. Entering character data and XML comments (exactly the same as HTML comments) are easy tasks. Although XML Pro 1.0 cannot create document type definition files, it understands how to link XML to DTD files used to validate the data.

Next, we'll show some examples of creating XML code in XML Pro 1.0.
