Today's Market: NYSE's Winners Wallop Losers; Stocks End Near Day's Highs
Monday Market Story
Staff Reporter The Street.com 8/14/00 5:12 PM ET Stocks galloped into the close as a quiet rally picked up steam in afternoon trading. Not surprisingly, volume was light, but that didn't stop market watchers from feeling happy about the action.
The Steven Goldman, market strategist at Weeden in Greenwich, Conn. characterized today's upside as a bit of "catching up" as the market failed to respond to some positive signals last week. "For one the S&P 500 has been lagging most of the indices due to its heavy emphasis on tech stocks. It has been masking a lot of strength in the NYSE. A lot of the sectors have really exploded since mid-March," he said, despite the downturn in technology stocks. "The market fundamentals, with interest rates moderating, are the impetus behind the gains." The Dow's rally was broad, with almost all of its issues participating in the upside. The two biggest gainers were financial J.P. Morgan (JPM:NYSE), and Hewlett-Packard (HWP:NYSE), each of which added about 23 points. The TheStreet.com Internet Sector index rose 14.2, or 2%, to 736.7 helped by Lycos(LCOS:Nasdaq), up 2.2%, and CMGI(CMGI:Nasdaq), up 3.6%. And with tech stocks past their heyday, Canelo said that some retail names could be in fashion for some growth investors. "Growth investors are broadening their horizons, some tech stocks are seeing cuts in their growth and earnings, so I think that there might be some room [for these stocks] in growth portfolios." A couple of earnings reports from the retailers were adding to the hype, particularly ahead of Wednesday's Home Depot (HD:NYSE) was up 4.3% ahead of its earnings tomorrow. Lowe's(LOW:NYSE), which reported earnings in line with estimates and growing same-store sales this morning, was up 6.4%. The S&P 500 Retail Index gained 2.3% Toys R Us(TOY:NYSE) was also sailing, after beating analyst estimates. Toys R Us tacked on 3.6%. Meanwhile, total customer assets at Schwab rose 1%, to $936.8 billion from $931.2 billion in June, as the company brought in $21.3 billion in new assets, offsetting a $15.7 billion decline in asset value associated with market losses. Schwab's rise in trading activity last month outpaced that of privately held competitor Datek Online. Last week, Datek said that average online trades per day in July were 103,118 -- slightly down from June's 103,132. -- Caroline Humer Breadth was positive on light volume. Back to top NYSE Most Actives Back to top The Philadelphia Stock Exchange Oil Services Index bounced 3.4%, with Halliburton(HAL:NYSE) and Transocean Sedco Forex (RIG:NYSE) posting gains. In other energy news, The Wall Street Journal reported that price volatility and possible power shortages are worrying corporations nationwide. The Journal also reported that the U.S. Department of Energy expects heating bills could rise over 50% this winter on supply and price problems. After hitting a new all-time intraday trading high of 632.19, the American Stock Exchange Broker/Dealer Index ended up 1.2% to 631.06, a new record. Merrill Lynch(MER:NYSE) moved up 2.4%. Meanwhile, Bear Stearns(BSC:NYSE) lost a bit of ground, down 0.2%. Semiconductors were getting a boost from news that communications chipmaker Broadcom(BRCM:Nasdaq) plans to buy optical communications chipmaker NewPort(NEWP:) for $1.24 billion in stock. Broadcom was 7% higher. The Philadelphia Stock Exchange Semiconductor Index rose 7.7%, after Salomon Smith Barney analyst Jonathan Joseph upped his fiscal 2000 and 2001 EPS estimates on Micron Technology (MU:NYSE). Micron moved up 6.5%. Back to top There were no major economic releases today. A low-impact report on High-impact data, such as tomorrow's Back to top The U.K. markets got off to a sleepy start this week, but speculation about mergers in the bank and telecommunication sectors pushed key indices higher. Drug stocks were also moving higher. The London FTSE 100 closed up 35.40 to 6419.90. The CAC 40 in Paris ended up 56.36 to 6609.36 and the Xetra Dax in Frankfurt was lower 17.46 7305.52. The euro traded at $0.9051. Asian markets were flat to lower overnight. Tokyo investors managed to take the Bank of Japan's first interest rate hike in 10 years, announced Friday after the close, pretty much in stride. Japanese shares drifted a few notches higher, a quiet response to the 25 basis-point interest rate increase. The market lacked direction, while trading volume dwindled as investors rushed off to their vacations. The Nikkei 225 index rose 36.41 to close at 16,153.91, With short-term interest rates still very low, around 0.28%, an immediate reaction to the change is not expected. The dollar traded at 109.45 yen Also amid directionless trading, Hong Kong's Hang Seng index dropped 216.36 to close at 16,998.06. Some concerns over Pacific Century Cyberworks hit shares, which fell HK$0.70, or 4.4%, to 15.30 ($1.96). Sentiment has turned sour since investors got hold of news that chairman Richard Li sold about 240 million shares last Wednesday. This is on top of recent volatility as Cable & Wireless HKT investors struggle to chose between the cash or stock option this week before the two firms officially merge. Back to top
