Not All Typefaces Appear in Font Menus Although They Appear in ATM

Issue

After you install a Type 1 font (also called a PostScript font) in Adobe Type Manager (ATM) for Windows, the names for only some of the font's typefaces (e.g., regular, roman) appear in application font menus. The names for all the font's typefaces (e.g., bold, italic) appear in ATM.

Solution

Use the regular (i.e., roman) typeface, then apply a type style (e.g., bold, italic) to the text.

Additional Information

Type 1 fonts often have different names in Windows font menus than they do in the Adobe Type Library brochure or Macintosh font menus and the Adobe Type Library brochure.

Windows can display up to four typeface names (e.g., normal, bold, italic, bolditalic) per font family in application font menus. Because of this limitation, typeface names for many font families that have bold, semibold, or italic typefaces do not appear in font menus. To access these typefaces, you must apply a style link -- that is, apply the bold or italic type style--to text formatted with a regular (roman) font.

To help you determine which style link to use, ATM lists each font's Windows menu name and the style link required to use it. ATM 4.0 lists these in the format "Fontname, Style link"; ATM 3.0x and earlier list these in the format "Fontname, STYLE LINK." Font name and style link information for Adobe Type 1 fonts is also listed in the document, "Fntnames.pdf" on the Type On Call CD-ROM, and in the ReadMe file of most font packages.

For general information about font style linking, see document 4147.
