United Airlines

United Airlines is both the largest air carrier in the world and the largest majority employee-owned company.

United offers nearly 2,300 flights a day to 135 destinations in 28 countries and one U.S. territory. Our five U.S. hubs -- Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Washington Dulles -- are strategically positioned across the United States, providing easy access to United's global network. As a member of Star Alliance, the airline network for Earth, United passengers enjoy access to more than 600 destinations around the world, 180 airport lounges, and the ability to accrue and redeem miles on any partner airline.

Success in our business starts with big ears. You have to listen carefully to your customers. Once they've spoken, you create new solutions and bring them to reality.

Look at what we're doing. This year in response to our research findings, United Airlines will continue to invest in new technology, innovative products, and employee training.

The airline is already developing new airport products such as "The Word," a gate-area message display board that will give customers continuous updated information on flight and seat status. We've already implemented our mobile "Chariots," supplementary wireless-linked service desks on wheels that can be deployed quickly to areas where additional resources are needed-taking service to the customer where they want it. In recognizing the importance of on-time operations, United also recently invested some $51 million in additional airport ground equipment and $10 million in baggage handling system improvements.

In 1999 United will introduce 30 new aircraft into its fleet including 10 Airbus A320/A319 aircraft, seven Boeing 747-400s and six Boeing 777s, while withdrawing 14 old 747s and DC-10s.

E-Business Takes Things Further, Faster.

United's initiatives in E-Business will attempt to leverage technologies to the maximum benefit of the traveling public. We want to create services and product features that incorporate wireless, internet, distributed computing, and other emerging communications interfaces. Make sure you pack your imagination, because you'll need it.

Consumers Energy

Consumers Energy, the principal subsidiary of CMS Energy Corporation, has been generating and distributing electrical power in Michigan for over 100 years. It is Michigan's largest natural gas and electric utility, serving more than six million of the states nine and one-half million residents in all 68 Lower Peninsula counties. And it is the forth-largest combined gas and electric utility in the United States.

About the Electronics Commerce Department of Consumers Energy:

When Consumers Energy started working with Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) in the mid-1980s, it was considered a competitive advantage. Now it has become necessary for doing business. Currently, we are working toward the goal of making Electronic Commerce (EC) the rule rather than the exception in our business transactions.

In any given day we exchange hundreds of electronic transactions with over 700 Preferred Trading Partners. We are continuing to grow those numbers as fast as equipment and software allow. Our ultimate goal is to let computers handle routine and costly procedures so that we all have more time to manage other parts of the operation.

We are currently exchanging a wide range of transaction sets with our Trading Partners, Including:

410, Rail Carrier Invoice
810, Invoice (outgoing energy bills & incoming vendor invoices)
811, Telephone Invoice
820, Payment Order/remittance advice
840, Request for quote
843, Response to Quote
846, Invoice Inquiry/advice
850, purchase Order
852, Product Activity Data
855, Purchase Order Response
860, Purchase Order Change
862, Shipping Schedule
863, Test Results
865, Purchase Order Change Acknowledgement
997, Functional Acknowledgement

Consumers Energy supports several versions of these transaction sets and is currently implementing version 4010 in order to be year 2000 compliant.

SAN ANTONIO ELECTRONIC COMMERCE RESOURCE CENTER (ECRC)

In our first years of operation, we at ECRC explored the emerging world of Electronic Commerce, learning what tools could serve our business clients  needs.  This solid grounding in the real world and the recent maturing of the EC world has let us begin exploiting technology to serve our clients and provide our government customers with a good value for their investment.  We have developed a number of tools that have dramatically increased our productivity.  For example, as little as a year and a half ago, our consultants needed nearly two hours to help a business person determine if selling to the government through EC made sense and select a Value-Added Network for conducting EDI with the federal government.  Using our on-line tool suite, that same consultation event now takes about 15 minutes.  Here are some of our accomplishments made possible by our abilities to exploit market technologies:

  • Developed "A Guide to EDI", an interactive tutorial diskette explaining the basics of EDI.
  • Launched the first interactive service on the Internet's World Wide Web for identifying federal procurement solicitations from the government's Federal Acquisition Computer Network (FACNET) (http://www.saecrc.org).
  • Developed the seminar "Business Opportunities with the DoD through EDI", a highly regarded and comprehensive explanation of selling to the government in today's changing environment.  It mixes live demonstrations of Internet-based EC, software demonstrations, and electronic presentations to take the seminar audience beyond the "Death By Viewgraph" norm.
  • Published "Internet Help File", a Windows-based tool for understanding and using the Internet.
  • Expanded this Internet Help File to a fully interactive Web-based prototype training program whose testing scenarios provide feedback to the user as guide for further learning.
  • Delivered information and assistance to clients using the Internet in 26,338 discrete sessions comprised of 460,114 individual hits during the 1996 Fiscal Year alone.

For more information, contact Butch McGehee at ECRC (210/732-1141) or butch@saecrc.org
